Cookies and storage

Last updated 15 October 2026

Clarity uses a few cookies and browser-storage items. Some are needed for the site to work. The rest measure how Clarity is read, and in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland (judged by the country Cloudflare reports for your connection) they are used only if you say yes. Session recording needs your yes in every country. There are no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. This page covers theclarity.today and theclarity.us. More on what we do with data is in the privacy policy.

Strictly necessary

These make sign-in, security and your settings work, so they need no consent.

__session, __client_uat and other __clerk* cookies
Keep you signed in (Clerk). Set only when you sign in.
Lasts: Session to 1 year
cf_clearance, __cf_bm
Security: shows Cloudflare you passed a bot check, so you are not asked again.
Lasts: 30 minutes to 1 year
clarity:consent, clarity:consent-notice
Your answer to the measurement question, and that you closed the notice without choosing.
Lasts: Until you change it
clarity:consent-region
Whether readers in your country are asked before measurement, from the country Cloudflare reports for your connection. Part of the consent question itself.
Lasts: Until the next page you open updates it
today-theme
Light or dark mode.
Lasts: Until you change it
today-role
The perspective you picked (builder, operator or investor).
Lasts: Until you change it
today-history
Stories opened on this device, so the front page can mark what you have read. Never sent to us.
Lasts: Until you clear it
today-banner
That you dismissed the top banner.
Lasts: Until you clear it
today-stack, clarity-today-stack
An older on-device My Stack, imported once into your account when you sign in.
Lasts: Until imported
clarity:today:* (session storage)
Short-lived page state: a draft you are sharing, a question in progress.
Lasts: Until the tab closes

Measurement

These help us see which pages work and which are hard to read. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland they wait for Accept; elsewhere they are used under a notice. Without consent there, after Opt out, or if your browser sends Global Privacy Control, the analytics ID is kept in memory only and forgotten when you leave the page, and layout versions last only for the tab. Session recording (clicks, scrolling and page changes, with what you type masked) needs Accept in every country and is never on by default.

ph_…_posthog (local and session storage)
An anonymous analytics ID and the current visit, so pages viewed in one visit are counted as one reader (PostHog).
Lasts: Until you clear it
today-exp-*
Which version of a page layout you were shown, so it stays the same between visits and we can compare versions.
Lasts: Until you clear it

theclarity.us

theclarity.us uses its own cookies and storage. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and whenever the country is unknown, none of its measurement storage is used until you choose Accept. Elsewhere analytics storage is used under a notice, and Opt out removes it. Session recording needs Accept everywhere, and Global Privacy Control turns all measurement off. Change your choice with Privacy choices at the foot of any theclarity.us page.

authjs.session-token
Keeps you signed in. Set only when you sign in with LinkedIn.
Lasts: 30 days
authjs.csrf-token, authjs.callback-url, authjs.state, authjs.nonce, authjs.pkce.code_verifier
Protect the LinkedIn sign-in against forgery and bring you back to the page you were on.
Lasts: 15 minutes to the end of the browser session
cf_clearance, __cf_bm
Security: shows Cloudflare you passed a bot check, so you are not asked again.
Lasts: 30 minutes to 1 year
clarity:consent, clarity:consent-notice
Your answer to the measurement question, and that you closed the notice.
Lasts: Until you change it
clarity-theme
Light or dark mode.
Lasts: Until you change it
Other clarity: keys (local and session storage)
Reading state on this device: which issue you have seen, where you stopped the podcast, a tour you closed, a post you are drafting. Never used for measurement.
Lasts: Until you clear it, or until the tab closes
ph_…_posthog, __ph_opt_in_out_… (local storage)
An anonymous analytics ID and the current visit (PostHog). Set only where analytics is allowed, and removed when you opt out.
Lasts: Until you opt out or clear it
clarity-posthog-replay-sample (session storage)
Whether this visit is one of those sampled for session recording. Set only after you choose Accept.
Lasts: Until the tab closes

Other sites

Story images are often loaded from the publisher that ran them. That publisher’s server, or its network provider, may set its own cookies when the image loads (for example a Cloudflare __cf_bm cookie on the publisher’s domain). We do not control or read those cookies; your browser’s third-party cookie settings apply to them.

Changing your choice

Change your measurement choice at any time with Privacy choices, here or in the footer of any page. You can also clear site data in your browser settings, which resets everything above.
