Gene readouts find signs of chronic stress in well-fed damselfish off urban Okinawa

Scientists at OIST, CNRS and Indiana University School of Medicine linked 585 liver genes in adult blue damselfish to urbanisation across 18 Okinawan sites. Urban fish looked well fed by their gene activity yet showed stronger immune and inflammatory signals.

Solar Orbiter traces a magnetic switchback to hot loops on the Sun's surface

Solar Orbiter flew through a large magnetic switchback and used the particles inside it to trace the kink to a source on the Sun's surface. The result comes from a single crossing, so it limits how switchbacks can begin but cannot yet say how most of them do.

Wavefront-shaped focus through scattering layers fluctuates several times more than theory predicts

Physicists at Saint Louis University and CNRS found that focusing gain through opaque layers swings several times wider than correlation-free theory predicts. The average still matched theory, so the excess spread is the part that reports on the medium.

Elastic sugar chains let a pitcher plant's fluid grip insects harder the faster they struggle

Raffles' pitcher plant traps insects in fluid whose elastic force measured 10,000 times its viscosity under simulated kicks. Field work in Borneo adds that the trap catches best at middling fluid levels and that the plant restores them within days.

I-care buys DiagFit to flag faults on satellites and helicopters that rarely fail

I-care acquired the assets of Grenoble's Amiral Technologies on Sept. 17. DiagFit learns an asset's normal behavior from operating data and flags departures from it, and it can run inside a customer's own network.

Experiments catch cracks creeping as flat patches long before the break

Yuval Paz, Jay Fineberg and colleagues watched two-dimensional broken patches creep for at least three quarters of a fracture event, a slow stage classical fracture mechanics was never built to describe.
