Copernicus holds off calling El Niño the strongest after a record 29.70C reading in Nino3.4
Copernicus said Nino3.4 sea surface temperatures hit an all-time high of 29.70C in September, above the 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2015/16 peaks. Its newer index, which adjusts for warming of the tropical oceans, does not yet put the event above those three, so the record and the ranking come apart.

Copernicus put August 2026 at 16.96C, a hundredth of a degree above July 2023 and inside its own uncertainty, so it calls the month a tie. The clustering of the record months is the firmer finding.

World Meteorological Organization forecasts put El Niño's peak around December and give it a near-100% chance of lasting through February 2027. Its maps tilt regional odds toward heat, drought or flood, and WMO says they do not replace local forecasts.

Warming aggravated by El Niño drives tuna and anchovy from Latin America's Pacific coast
Jonathan Cedeno's Guayaquil survey found water off Ecuador up to 6°C warmer at 40 meters over ten weeks, as fishers along the Pacific coast land less. Surface water warmed 2.5 to 3°C, and so far the damage is recorded in skippers' own accounts from four countries, with El Niño's peak still ahead.
