September retail sales growth drops from 0.8% to 0.2% without gas stations

U.S. retail sales rose 0.8% in September to $745.0 billion, but only 0.2% when gasoline is excluded, AP and Bloomberg reported. The series is not adjusted for prices, so the 0.6-point gap is the part of the gain most exposed to fuel inflation.

Activity rose in nine of 12 Fed districts in the October Beige Book, but most reported little or no change in consumer spending. More than half said high-income households supplied much of it, and a PYMNTS survey showed confidence falling for a second month.

Beer and diluted soju supply 97% of the two-year fall in Korea's domestic liquor tax

Korea's tax on domestically produced alcohol fell 4.5% to 2.4352 trillion won in 2025, a six-year low, National Tax Service data show. Beer and diluted soju explain nearly all of the two-year drop, but four years of falling retail sales cloud the youth-drinking story.

US second-quarter growth revised up to 2.2%, fueled by consumer spending, AI investment, and stock-market wealth effects

Commerce Department figures put US second-quarter growth at 2.2%, up from a 1.5% estimate, as consumer spending rose at a 3.8% pace. Chip imports cut that total, so an AI pullback would hit hardest through the stock gains funding wealthy households' spending.

Older millennials spend just over twice what Gen Z does per customer on hobbies, according to a Bank of America Institute analysis. If the bank's economist is right that life stage drives the gap, younger millennials will grow into the same spending.

August's retail gain leans on pump prices and a Prime Day rebound

Retail sales rose 1.2% in August to $773 billion, and 1.1% without gas stations. Part of that monthly jump refills a July hole left by Amazon Prime Day moving to June, so the 4.9% ex-gasoline annual rate carries the case.

The July retail miss is a Prime Day artifact, not a consumer crack

Unadjusted spending rose 0.9% in July and 5.2% year over year, with restaurants up 6.0%. The seasonally adjusted decline mostly reflects Prime Day moving from July to June.
