Sukunaarchaeum keeps the genes to copy its own DNA in the smallest genome yet found

Sukunaarchaeum, a marine archaeon with 189 protein-coding genes, carries genes for copying its DNA and making proteins but almost none for food or energy. That puts it nearer an independent cell than an organelle, though so far the only evidence is its genome.

Bigelow's dark-ocean atlas ties 9,600 genomes to the individual cells they came from

Bigelow Laboratory's GORG-Dark holds more than 9,600 genomes, each from a single sorted cell, including samples from the Mariana Trench and the Antarctic, and the Cell paper reports widespread genetic potential for chemoautotrophy.

Single-cell maps date a microglial handover in the hippocampus to ages 50 through 75

A Science paper reads gene regulation cell by cell in the human hippocampus and finds embryonic microglia giving way to cells with blood-like inflammatory signatures across a 25-year band of adult life.

A rare neuron-like cell may spare dogs a jaw resection

Cornell researchers say single-cell sequencing separates a destructive benign canine oral tumor from its malignant lookalike, and that an ERBB4 inhibitor slowed it in live tissue.

Aging on a schedule: a mouse cell atlas argues for windows, not doses

Junyue Cao read 21 million cells from 14 organs and says aging arrives in discrete stages. If the staging holds, an intervention has a window rather than a dose.
