Copernicus holds off calling El Niño the strongest after a record 29.70C reading in Nino3.4
Copernicus said Nino3.4 sea surface temperatures hit an all-time high of 29.70C in September, above the 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2015/16 peaks. Its newer index, which adjusts for warming of the tropical oceans, does not yet put the event above those three, so the record and the ranking come apart.

Seoul answers Ukraine's diesel complaint by pointing to its 1,402-item export-control list
Ukraine's sanctions adviser Vladyslav Vlasiuk criticized South Korean fuel shipments to Russia after the Guardian tracked over 176,000 tons in July and August. Any cost to the refiners shipping from Ulsan and Yeosu would come through Seoul's own export-control list, and the government's reply leaves open whether diesel is on it.

India counts its exotic-pet trade almost entirely by what enforcement intercepts
A seizure count rises when smuggling rises and also when inspection does. In India it is the main published measure of the exotic-pet trade that delivered five orangutan infants to a zoo in Odisha.

Switzerland's glaciers ran out of winter snow on June 29, the second-earliest date on record
Glacier Loss Day fell on June 29 in Switzerland, three days later than the 2022 record, after one of the five thinnest central-Alpine snowpacks in three decades. The date fixes timing; the season's total ice loss is a separate measurement.

Indonesian fires outran 2015's emissions for one measured week
CAMS is comparing this season to 2015 and 2019, both exceptional El Nino years. For anyone planning around regional haze, the more durable input is the drained peatland that turns a dry spell into weeks of smoke downwind.
