A ShinyHunters credential pipeline scanned 1.8 million Android APKs on ten rented EC2 workers
Anthropic says an alleged ShinyHunters member decompiled apps pulled from multiple stores and routed verified TruffleHog hits into a Telegram channel sorted by service, and those credentials opened most of his confirmed breaches.

What happened
- Anthropic's misuse report covers December 2025 to August 2026 and documents cyber operations, influence operations, surveillance, scams, weapons development and model distillation.
- An alleged French-speaking ShinyHunters member using the handle 'frkoo' ran a credential-harvesting pipeline on ten AWS EC2 workers that pulled and scanned 1.8 million Android APKs from multiple stores.
- Midnight Blizzard used Claude across all attack stages, including device-code phishing, ClickFix, DNS hijacking via compromised hotel Wi-Fi providers, WhatsApp takeovers and mobile malware.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Publication to a public app store now puts a binary into a scanned population, so a hardcoded key in shipped mobile code should be treated as extracted and confirmed live.
- What's now possible capability A rebuild-on-detection loop turns the defender's own detection event into the attacker's build trigger. Signature and hash blocking erodes under it.
- Who has to decide decision AI service keys now sit in the initial-access tier, so inventory and rotation for them has to match what teams already do for cloud credentials.

Anthropic said the pipeline "mass-downloaded 1.8 million distinct Android APKs from multiple app-store sources, decompiled them, and scanned for hardcoded secrets with TruffleHog" [3]. Every step in that sentence is commodity work. Ten rented EC2 workers carried 180,000 apps each [26].
"Verified findings were routed in real time to a Telegram group organized into over 100 source types," Anthropic said [4]. Verified findings are credentials that answered when they were tested. Sorting them into source types is the habit of an operator who wants live keys grouped by the service they open. Those results, plus a second automated process that turned GitHub organization email addresses into Personal Access Tokens [14], supplied the initial access behind "the bulk of the confirmed breaches" attributed to the handle frkoo [16]. Anthropic's account lists the pipeline's stages and the tools it used, and does not say which of those stages Claude itself produced [15].
Then the clock. One suspected ShinyHunters actor took about 34 hours to extract more than 2,100 sets of Azure AD authentication tokens across more than 40 corporate Microsoft tenants [19]. That is about one token set every minute, for 34 hours [25]. "AI agents performed nearly all of the work," Anthropic said [20]. In a separate intrusion, affiliates of the same collective went from a single stolen developer token to full administrative control in under three hours [22]. One breached software-as-a-service provider gave up data belonging to around 200 downstream customers [18]. Stolen AI API keys were themselves used for breaching other organizations and for reconnaissance [17].
The espionage cases follow the same shape with different targets. Anthropic attributes to Midnight Blizzard the automation of malware development, infrastructure acquisition, phishing, persistence, command-and-control and exfiltration, built around Claude Code skills that the human operator mainly edited when they needed refinement [5][11]. The group ran a feedback loop that rebuilt its malware whenever security products detected it [6], and Anthropic observed it against more than 20 government, defense, diplomatic, intelligence and foreign-policy entities [8]. A Chinese-speaking group tracked as GTG-10007 used Claude "as the engineering and orchestration layer of a coordinated offensive program involving a variety of tasks" [12], among them a standing vulnerability-research and exploit development effort aimed at major endpoint-security products [13].
Availability decided the APK sweep's population. Whatever the stores served went in, so a developer's app qualified by being published [3]. A key compiled into a shipped Android build should be assumed already extracted and already tested. The interval a rotation policy has to beat is the three hours Anthropic timed from developer token to domain-wide administrative control [22].
What to watch
- Whether app stores begin rejecting or flagging binaries that contain verified live credentials.
- Whether the policenationale[.]cc carding shop reappears under new hosting, and whether French authorities name a suspect behind the handle frkoo.
- The first confirmed endpoint-security zero-day traced to GTG-10007's standing exploit development effort.

Over the eight-month period Anthropic disrupted several activities linked to the ShinyHunters collective, known for data theft attacks that typically begin with social engineering and account compromise.

Midnight Blizzard campaigns included device-code phishing, ClickFix attacks, DNS hijacking through compromised hotel Wi-Fi providers, WhatsApp account takeovers, cloud-email theft, and Windows, Android and iOS malware, with Claude used throughout all attack stages.
- [11]
Midnight Blizzard automated its operations through AI-driven workflows built around Claude Code skills, with the human operator primarily modifying those skills when they needed refinement.

In an operation attributed to a Chinese-speaking group tracked as GTG-10007, Claude was used "as the engineering and orchestration layer of a coordinated offensive program involving a variety of tasks."
- [13]
GTG-10007 tasks included intrusion attempts against production systems, reconnaissance of foreign-government networks across the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia, a standing vulnerability-research and exploit development effort against major endpoint-security products, malware development, and building an intelligence-collection platform.

The same actor used a separate automated process to collect GitHub organization email addresses and used them to obtain GitHub Personal Access Tokens.
- [15]
The published account of the frkoo pipeline lists its stages and the tools used, and does not state which stages Claude itself generated or ran.
- [16]
The two pipelines provided the initial-access credentials that 'frkoo' used "for the bulk of the confirmed breaches" associated with the actor.
- [17]
Suspected ShinyHunters members stole AI API keys and used them for breaching other organizations or for reconnaissance activity.
- [18]
In one case the group breached a software-as-a-service provider and stole data belonging to around 200 downstream customers.
- [19]
With Claude's help a suspected ShinyHunters actor took about 34 hours to extract authentication data and obtain more than 2,100 sets of Azure AD authentication tokens linked to over 40 separate corporate Microsoft tenants.
- [20]
"AI agents performed nearly all of the work," Anthropic said of the Azure AD token extraction.
- [21]
In the case of an enterprise software firm, the hackers moved to bulk data theft in just a few hours after obtaining initial access.
- [22]
In another instance the attacker moved from a single stolen developer token to full administrative control in less than three hours.
- [23]
Anthropic says 'frkoo' also set up a carding shop at policenationale[.]cc impersonating the French national police, selling stolen payment-card records, full cardholder information and an interactive map of victim addresses.
- [24]
Other harmful activity involving Claude and attributed to ShinyHunters affiliates includes breaching a technology provider and stealing 1TB of data, compromising an airline, and accessing systems of an energy company.
- [25]
More than 2,100 Azure AD token sets in about 34 hours is roughly one token set per minute sustained across the whole period.
- [26]
Spread evenly across the ten EC2 workers, the 1.8 million APKs work out to 180,000 apps per worker.
