Google will turn every Gemini Gem into a slash-invoked skill on November 17

Google will retire Gemini's Gems on November 17, 2026, and auto-migrate each one to a cross-task "skill." Anyone who built a custom assistant keeps the work but loses the sidebar and picks it with a slash instead.

What happened

  • Launched in 2024, Gems let users teach Gemini a repeatable task, from a coding partner or editor to a personal running coach or nutritionist.
  • When the notice appeared, Google's Learn more help article and Create skills button were both non-functional, suggesting the announcement went out early.
  • For now, making skills requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription and switching to the Gemini Spark tab.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction 9to5Google calls the slash the better path for dropping the side-panel detour; TechCrunch calls it an interface engineers prefer over regular folks.
  • What it limits constraint The announcement does not confirm that a Gem's default tool, attached files, and sharing links all carry into the new format intact.
  • What it sets up precedent A named, navigation-placed feature folded into another about two years after launch is a reason to weigh how much to invest in any branded Google AI feature.

Google converts every Gem into a slash-command skill starting November 17

Confirmed2 publishers

The migration is automatic, so nobody has to rebuild anything. Google says it will move the Gems to the new format and that users do not need to act; the existing Gems keep working until they migrate [3][5]. That is the good news for the person who spent an afternoon writing instructions for a running coach or a nutritionist [9].

The change is in how you reach the thing you built. A Gem lived in the side panel under My Gems, and you opened it by going there and scrolling down [15]. A skill is invoked by typing a forward slash in the prompt box, and more than one can run in the same thread [7][4]. 9to5Google frames the slash as the better path because it drops the side-panel detour [15]. TechCrunch reads the same interface the other way: entering a "/" to select a skill is a convention "that engineers, not regular folks, tend to prefer" [16]. A rollout owner has to settle that disagreement for their own users. If the people using your Gem are not the kind who reach for a slash command, the migration keeps its instructions but moves it behind a slash command instead of the side panel.

Both let you give Gemini custom instructions [11]. Gems went further: you could set a default tool such as Create image or Canvas, attach specific files for context, and share the whole thing with other people by link [12][13]. The announcement does not say whether every one of those settings survives the migration intact, and Google's own help scaffolding was not ready when the notice appeared. 9to5Google found the "Learn more" article and the "Create skills" button both non-functional, and suggested the announcement rolled out slightly early [8].

Gems launched in 2024 with their own name, icon, and a spot in the app's navigation [6][1]. Roughly two years later they are folded into skills, a format Google introduced with Gemini Spark [11]. TechCrunch argues this is why Google should not give every new AI feature its own brand and prominent placement when it may merge one into another later [14]. Making skills, for now, requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription and switching to the Gemini Spark tab [10].

Google is pitching continuity: your work is safe, nothing to do. What it is actually doing is relocating the interface and demoting the brand. For a team that shared a Gem with colleagues or customers, the work to do before November 17 is telling those people the assistant now lives behind a slash, and checking after migration that the default tool and attached files came across.

What to watch

  • Whether Google confirms that a Gem's default tool, attached files, and sharing links migrate to skills without loss.
  • When the Learn more help article and Create skills button start working, which will show how the migration actually behaves.
  • Whether skill creation stays gated behind AI Pro and AI Ultra or opens to free Gemini users.
