Pixel 10a buyers now pay $100 more for the phone Google launched in March
Google has raised the Pixel 10a to $599 from $499 seven months after launch, with no change to the phone. Memory prices are reaching devices already on shelves, so handset budgets need room for rises partway through a model's life.
The Product Desk
What happened
- The 256GB model now costs $699, and the new prices are already live at the Google Store, Amazon and Best Buy.
- Google vice president Shakil Barkat said in July that RAM had risen from $2.80 to $12 per gigabyte, citing Morgan Stanley.
- When Google confirmed higher Pixel 11 prices, it said the increases would eventually reach in-market Pixel phones, 9to5Google reported.
- Apple raised prices on older iPhones last month, and Samsung added $100 across most of its Galaxy S26 range this week.
- Currys warned in July that phones would cost more once its stockpile cover ended after September, and it has not yet announced a rise.
Why it matters
- What it costs cost Anyone who budgeted the 10a at its launch price pays about a fifth more on every handset still to be bought, an overrun that lands on whoever signed off the original figure.
- Who has to decide decision Buyers with staggered orders on models that have not moved yet must choose between spending cash early and carrying a buffer for a rise that is now routine on shelf stock.
- Who's exposed exposure UK, Irish and Nordic buyers are planning against a rise that has been signalled but not priced, with Currys' stockpile cover past and Google not saying whether Europe follows.
- What it sets up precedent With Apple, Samsung and Google all repricing phones already in shops within about a month, a mid-life price rise becomes a standard line in any handset budget.

Picture the office manager who priced a set of Pixel 10a phones at $499 each in the spring and goes back to Best Buy this week for the rest of the order. The 128GB model is $599 there, and it is the same phone [1][3].
Refresh plans built on launch prices assume a phone gets cheaper as it ages. The 10a went up 20% in seven months [12]. It still runs a Tensor G4, two generations behind the chip in the Pixel 11, and it arrived in March with limited improvements on the Pixel 9a, according to The Next Web [9]. When the Pixel 11 launched at $899 in August, the 10a sat $400 below it. The gap is now $300 [5][13].
Google did not respond to The Next Web's request for comment [4]. The cost pressure is on the record anyway. Shakil Barkat's July figures put RAM at about 4.3 times its earlier price per gigabyte [10][17]. The Next Web puts memory at as much as half the parts cost of a budget Android phone, against about 15% before the shortage, and reports that DDR5 prices in Germany rose 414% in a year [19][20].
A model that holds its price can still arrive with less memory. Google cut the Pixel 11 Pro from 16GB to 12GB at the 256GB tier and is reworking Android to need less [14]. Nothing went further and cancelled a budget phone in June instead of shipping one that was not a step forward [11].
I'd sort any pending handset purchase on two lines: whether the vendor has already repriced that model, and whether you buy it once or in tranches over the coming year.
- Repriced, bought once. The price is known. Buy at it, and check the successor's memory spec before deciding to wait for it [14]. - Repriced, bought in tranches. Rebase every remaining tranche on the new figure, $599 for a 128GB 10a [1]. - Not yet repriced, bought once. Buying now locks today's price ahead of the in-market rises Google has signalled [6]. - Not yet repriced, bought in tranches. This is the exposed corner. I'd pull the orders forward. The tradeoff is cash spent earlier on phones that will be older by the time the last one is handed out. Where pulling forward is not possible, carry a buffer of $100 a handset, about 20% on a $499 phone [12].
For UK, Irish and Nordic orders, every model belongs in the not-yet-repriced half until Google or Currys publishes a number [18][16]. The $100 buffer matches the Pixel 11's rise over the Pixel 10 and Samsung's step across most of the Galaxy S26 range [5][8].
What to watch
- Whether Google publishes European Pixel 10a prices, and whether Currys puts a figure on the post-stockpile rises it warned of in July.
- Which other in-market Pixel models Google reprices after the 10a, given its warning that in-market phones would be affected.
- Whether Google's next a-series phone ships with less memory, as the Pixel 11 Pro did at the 256GB tier.
