Lego prices its $170 Joker wall art at roughly the per-brick rate of a $30 Batmobile
Lego is taking pre-orders for a $169.99, 1,849-piece Joker wall art set that ships January 1, 2027. Per brick it costs about what the two Batmobiles in the same wave cost, so the adult display piece is priced higher because it is bigger.
The Product Desk
What happened
- The same wave adds a $59.99, 672-piece Batman Returns Batmobile & Duck and a $29.99, 317-piece Arkham Batmobile, both rated for ages nine and up.
- Pre-ordering the Joker set at New York Comic Con adds a reprint of Detective Comics #880 with a Lego-brick cover, and cover artist Jock signs at the DC booth on Thursday, October 8, from 11 am.
- Both Batmobile sets unlock a gold theme called the Golden Red Brick in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and the Batman Returns set also adds a gold Batcave prop.
- The finished Joker panel measures roughly 20 inches by 15 inches, hangs on a wall, and is sold to builders aged 18 and up.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint The reprint and Jock's signature go only to people who pre-order at the booth, while a collector ordering from home commits just as early for the same January 1 box.
- What's now possible capability The gold game unlock gives the two cheaper sets a reason to buy that works for any buyer in any location, as long as they also own Legacy of the Dark Knight.
- What it costs cost The booth perk costs Lego one comic reprint per on-site order and one signing session, and it gets collectors to commit about 12 weeks before the set ships.

A fan at DC booth #4365 is looking up at a nine-foot brick-built copy of the Detective Comics #880 cover [9]. To leave with the signed reprint, they have to pre-order a $169.99 set today, and it ships January 1, 2027 [8][1][2]. Counting from Jock's Thursday signing, the wait is 85 days [18].
The press release sells the set on "eyes and features that pop off the surface with hidden details waiting in the deeper layer" [11]. What the buyer gets is 1,849 pieces that rebuild Jock's cover for an issue Scott Snyder wrote, as a panel for the wall [1][7][3].
Divide each price by its piece count and the three sets land within a cent of each other. The Joker panel costs about 9.2 cents a piece [14]. The Batman Returns Batmobile & Duck comes to about 8.9 cents [15], and the Arkham Batmobile to about 9.5 cents [16]. The Joker set costs about 5.7 times as much as the Arkham car and has about 5.8 times the pieces [17]. Piece count is a rough gauge, because parts differ in size and the Arkham car uses a new windscreen mold [5]. In this wave, the adult buyer pays the nine-and-up rate per piece and gets more pieces [6].
Both sources cover only these three sets. Neither reports pre-order figures or compares this wave with earlier Lego DC pricing, so the evidence cannot show whether Lego's licensed adult line as a whole is moving to higher price points.
A launch team can tell itself that a crowded booth predicts a strong January. The booth measures something narrower. It counts the collectors who were in one hall during the convention and wanted the reprint enough to order about 12 weeks ahead [10][18]. It says little about the buyer who first hears of the set on January 1.
Two questions sort a launch like this one. The first is whether the higher-priced item charges a higher unit rate or the same rate for more units. The second is whether the early-buyer perk requires being somewhere or works from home. The Joker panel is the same rate, and you have to be there. The Batmobiles are the same rate, with a perk delivered inside a video game [12]. I'd copy the flat unit rate and put the scarcity in the perk, as Lego did with the Joker panel. The cost is margin. By this measure Lego charges its adult display buyer slightly less per piece than the buyer of the $29.99 Arkham car [14][16].
What to watch
- Whether Lego publishes pre-order or sell-through figures for the Joker panel after the January 1, 2027 launch.
- Whether online pre-orders get any perk to match the on-site reprint before New York Comic Con closes.
- Whether the next Lego DC adult display set keeps to roughly 9 cents a piece or is priced above that rate.
