Nothing schedules Android 17 for nine more phones through January 2027 after starting with the Phone (3)

Nothing began rolling out stable Nothing OS 5.0 on Android 17 to the Phone (3) on Oct. 12, the first of its phones to get it. TechRepublic reported that nine more Nothing and CMF models are scheduled through January 2027, so fleet owners have an end date to plan against.

Rollout could run about 16 weeks past the start Dates for Nothing OS 5.0 on Android 17, from the start of beta testing to the end point, if 'through January 2027' means Jan. 31.

Timeline: Nothing OS 5.0 and Android 17 beta testing began in August 2026. The general rollout started on Oct. 12, 2026, with Phone 3 in India. If 'through January 2027' means the end of the month, the schedule ends Jan. 31, 2027, 111 days, about 16 weeks, after the Oct. 12 start.

What happened

  • Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 are left out of Nothing OS 5.0 because they have reached the end of their major operating system upgrade support.
  • Nothing calls the dates estimates, not guaranteed deadlines, and says the rollout is phased by region and carrier and the schedule may change.
  • Nothing said the update adds more than 80 changes across design, personalisation, performance and AI, according to The Hindu.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Change windows cannot be tied to a month for any one model, because Nothing can move its estimates. January 2027 is the only outer marker.
  • Who's exposed exposure Owners of the three excluded models have no security-patch end date from Nothing's announcement, so their exposure window stays unknown until each device's support policy is checked.
  • What it costs cost While the staged rollout runs, a mixed fleet will have old and new builds side by side, so help-desk notes and training screenshots have to cover both.

An admin who opened Settings > System > System update on a Phone (3) on Monday, Oct. 12, could have found nothing waiting [5][7]. Droid Life said the rollout is staged, so it does not reach every Phone (3) on day one, and availability varies by region [4]. The stable build followed a beta that began in August 2026 [2].

The harder planning problem is the other nine models. TechRepublic points to Nothing's roadmap for the model-by-model dates, and its own text names only the end point, January 2027 [10]. Counting the Phone (3), that makes ten models [14]. If "through January" means the end of the month, the last model in line could trail the first by 111 days, about 16 weeks [17]. The Hindu is vaguer: Nothing will release the update to other Nothing and CMF phones in the months to come [7].

Nothing calls the dates estimates [6]. We'd expect a fleet spread across carriers to see handsets of the same model get the update on different days.

So far the long feature list has reached one model, on a staged release [3]. In our view the AI items are the least settled part. Times of India lists Essential Space's Smart Collections and the Essential Apps Builder among what the stable build brings [9]. Nothing's note that Essential Space gains arrive through Google Play [12] means installing 5.0 does not by itself bring those features. TechRepublic adds that some functions depend on hardware or on later app updates [13].

We'd recommend piloting on the Phone (3) now and booking no month-specific change windows for the other nine, with January 2027 treated as a ceiling that can move. The cost is that a team waiting on one particular model has no date to give its users.

Sort each handset by two tests: whether its model is among the ten, and whether you hold a written security-patch end date for it. A listed model with a date in hand waits its turn and gets checked against the roadmap monthly. A listed model with no date waits too, and the date is worth requesting before any upgrade decision depends on it. An unlisted model (Phone (1), Phone (2) or CMF Phone 1 [11]) with a date in hand gets a replacement scheduled for that date.

An unlisted model with no date comes first. Losing Android 17 does not by itself end security patches [15], but TechRepublic says owners should check the device's own support policy to learn whether patches continue and when coverage ends [16].

What to watch

  • Any change to the per-model dates in Nothing's OS 5.0 roadmap, since Nothing says the schedule may change.
  • Whether Nothing publishes security-patch end dates for Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1.
  • Which Essential Space features land through Google Play and which wait for later releases, including the redesigned capture experience.
