Investors put $8M behind Othello's AI that tells sales reps what to say mid-call

Othello raised an $8 million seed round led by a16z Speedrun and Owl Capital to build AI that prompts sales reps during live calls. Salesloft already sells real-time coaching, and whether Othello's prompts improve results remains to be shown.

Othello's deck: reps ramp slower and leave more Research by The Bridge Group and a 2025 Gartner study, as cited in Othello's pitch deck for live sales coaching.

Figures in Othello's pitch deck: the average salesperson takes 13 months to reach productivity, 32% slower than four years ago, and 35% of reps leave each year, double three years ago (The Bridge Group); salespeople drove 60% of B2B revenue, forecast to increase to 75% (Gartner).

What happened

  • The product listens to video calls and, drawing on a company's uploaded sales and product materials, suggests questions, answers tricky queries and flags missed opportunities through an on-screen overlay.
  • Othello says its Hamlet model returns suggestions in under 500 milliseconds and that its desktop app overlays prompts without joining the meeting as a participant.
  • Othello says its customers include Microsoft and Capital One.
  • The company plans to spend the money on engineering and expects head count to rise from 20 to around 80.

Why it matters

  • Who has to decide decision A sales leader weighing live coaching now chooses between an incumbent that already ships it and a small specialist whose pitch is speed, and the founder expects platform vendors to be the larger threat.
  • Who's exposed exposure Live coaching puts customer-call content and CRM context into a vendor that is currently 20 people, and the promise that shared models are not trained on a customer's data is the company's own statement.
  • What it limits constraint The demand case in the deck rests on ramp time, turnover and revenue share, so any pilot has to measure those outcomes, since the investor interest behind the round does not.

Othello enters a category that already has incumbents. Salesloft provides real-time coaching, and Gong and Salesloft both offer tools that analyze sales conversations [5]. Both have raised hundreds of millions of dollars and carry multibillion-dollar valuations, and Business Insider describes Othello as a much smaller challenger [6]. Othello's Jared Zelman said a singular focus on in-call help would be an advantage if an enterprise company such as Salesforce or HubSpot launched a similar product [7]. In our view that comment locates the real competition. The likeliest route for live coaching onto a sales team is a platform the team already licenses.

Speed is where the product succeeds or fails, and Zelman says so himself, describing a trade-off that lands on the rep. "Providing real-time recommendations is so damn hard because if it's too slow or not smart enough, it's really unhelpful and very, very distracting," he said [8].

The deck's demand case rests on ramp time and turnover. Othello cites The Bridge Group for a 13-month average time to productivity, 32% slower than four years ago [9]. It cites a separate Bridge Group report that 35% of sales reps leave each year, double the rate of three years ago [10]. It also cites a 2025 Gartner study that found salespeople drove 60% of business-to-business revenue, a share forecast to reach 75% within four years [11].

Those figures describe the problem Othello wants to solve, and none of them measures Othello's own results. Let's Data Science, reviewing the company's announcement, called the usage and sector claims company claims, not independently validated measures, and said the announcement does not provide a comparative evaluation of suggestion quality, customer outcomes or data-governance controls [12]. The outlet listed what a buyer should ask: "how accurately the system transcribes a call, whether its recommendations are grounded in approved customer and product information, which participants can access call data, and whether it improves outcomes in a measured workflow" [13]. It also makes the skeptic's point itself: the funding round signals investor interest in the category but does not by itself establish those results [14].

Sequencing matters more than the funding headline. A sales leader who pilots a tool this quarter will hold the only outcome data in the picture, and that data will drive next quarter's decision on whether to extend. But the product being tested is moving. Othello plans to grow from 20 employees to about 80, a fourfold increase [4]. It also plans to add coaching of individual sellers on their strengths and weaknesses, beyond learning from a company's best performers, and Zelman envisions use in in-person meetings through smart glasses [16].

What to watch

  • Whether Salesforce or HubSpot launches in-call coaching, the scenario Zelman says his product's focus is meant to withstand.
  • Whether Othello publishes a comparative evaluation of suggestion quality, customer outcomes or data-governance controls.
  • Whether the planned hiring from 20 to about 80 employees lands, and with it the individual-seller coaching on the roadmap.
