Stripe buys the toll booth: a reported $7.5bn for OpenRouter, and the routing layer
Stripe confirmed its purchase of OpenRouter, the gateway 10 million developers use to pick between 400-plus models. The reported price is several times its valuation months ago.

What happened
- Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter, the startup whose software helps companies route their spending across hundreds of AI models. Stripe confirmed the deal on Wednesday, making official an acquisition the press first reported earlier this month.
- Neither company put a figure on the deal.
- The New York Times said Stripe is paying $7.5 billion, citing a person with knowledge of the terms.
- Of the $7.5 billion, $1.5 billion goes to OpenRouter's founders and $6 billion to its investors, according to the New York Times.
- Axios, citing its own sources, put the price higher, at more than $8 billion, mostly in stock.
Why it matters
Stripe confirmed on Wednesday that it is buying OpenRouter, the startup whose software routes each AI request to whichever of more than 400 models from over 80 providers fits best on price, speed and reliability [1][12]. Neither side named a price: the New York Times reports $7.5 billion, citing a person with knowledge of the terms, while Axios puts it above $8 billion, mostly in stock [23][24][26].
The markup is the tell. Bloomberg reported investors valued OpenRouter at about $1.3 billion in a round earlier this year, which makes the Times figure roughly 5.8 times that price and the Axios figure about 6.2 times, months later [2][20][21]. The Times says $1.5 billion goes to the founders and $6 billion to backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, Nvidia and Alphabet's CapitalG [25][11].
What that money buys is position, not technology. OpenRouter says it processes more than 10 trillion tokens a day for over 10 million developers and businesses, which works out to about $750 per account at the Times price [13][22]. It launched in 2023 with a handful of models, and its backers say token volume has doubled roughly every few months since [14]. Andrej Karpathy has called it the "transfer switch" of AI [15]. The reason it grew is arithmetic rather than allegiance: send cheap tasks to cheap, often open-source models, reserve frontier models for hard ones, and fail over to a backup when a provider goes down [16]. That trade got more attractive as strong open-source models arrived, many from China, with the Times citing Kimi from Moonshot AI [19].
Stripe's framing is consistent with what it already does, which is sit between businesses and their money and optimise authorisation, payments and fraud [3]. Patrick Collison said tokens are "the central currency for companies building with AI" and that the two firms would help customers "spend their tokens efficiently" [4]. Stripe launched a Token Billing product last year [5]. Alex Atallah, who previously co-founded OpenSea, said intelligence would be "multi-model" and that developers needed a neutral layer to manage it [6].
Neutrality is the load-bearing claim. OpenRouter says its routing decisions serve the user rather than any single provider, and that this will not change under Stripe [7]. Stripe says the platform is already used by Nvidia, Zoom and Lovable [17]. OpenRouter will keep its name, product and roadmap, and the deal is expected to close in the coming weeks subject to customary conditions [8].
The buyer has the balance sheet to pay in paper. A February employee share sale valued Stripe at $159 billion, up from $91.5 billion [10]; first-half revenue rose 41 percent year on year, and the company says 88 percent of the Forbes AI 50, including OpenAI and Anthropic, build on it [9]. Its letter to investors called the start of the year "the beginning of the singularity" [18].
Watch whether model providers keep shipping to a gateway owned by a payments company, whether Token Billing and routing merge into one bill, and whether any provider's placement changes after close [5][7][8].

OpenRouter runs a single gateway to the AI market: through one interface developers can reach more than 400 models from over 80 providers, compare them, and send each request to whichever model fits best on price, speed and reliability.
