Valve puts the first Steam Frames behind a lottery open only to past Steam buyers

Valve's new headset starts at $1,059 for 256GB and ships without a charger. The first batch is rationed by a randomised draw that only Steam accounts with a previous purchase can enter.

What happened

  • Valve set the Steam Frame at $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB, with UK and euro list prices of £889 and €1,049 for the base configuration.
  • Every headset ships with a copy of Half-Life: Alyx, which Valve ported to run natively on the Frame as well as by streaming.
  • Registration for the first batch closes September 17th at 10AM PT, after which Valve randomises the list and lets lottery winners buy from September 18th.
  • Gizmodo reports that entering the draw requires a Steam account that has previously bought something from the Steam store.
  • The Frame arrives after the Steam Controller in May and the Steam Machine in June, having slipped from an early 2026 target due in part to RAMageddon.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost The store price is not the wallet price. A buyer who wants the charger, the recommended strap kit and colour passthrough pays within three dollars of the 1TB base model, so the accessory bill decides which tier is actually good value.
  • What it limits constraint Refreshing the page buys nothing and a fresh account buys nothing either, so Valve is allocating scarce first-batch units among people who have already spent money on Steam.
  • Who has to decide decision Anyone recommending this has to pick a library first: the 130 titles cleared for native play on ARM, or everything else, which needs a PC in the room and the dongle plugged in.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Valve's own framing leans on native local play, while Gizmodo's reviewer calls native performance a mixed bag and says streaming is the real reason to buy the headset.

32GB overtakes 16GB as the most common gaming PC memory size on Steam

The box does not include a USB-C charger. Valve sells one separately for $29, and the headset draws up to 45W [8][17]. The Verge's Sean Hollister, who reviewed the Frame, strongly recommends the $59 ergonomic accessories kit, whose removable top strap helps the one-pound headset sit more comfortably on the face [12][11]. Add both to the 256GB model and the total is $1,147 [35]. Colour passthrough costs another $149, for the Arcturus Vision Camera that plugs into the nose bridge port; the Frame's own passthrough is monochrome [14]. That comes to $1,296, three dollars under the list price of the 1TB Frame with no accessories at all [36].

Arcturus is planning around the draw. "Launch orders will be held for several days to allow customers to coordinate with their Steam Frame orders," the company wrote [15].

The storage decision gets made early, because you register for the configuration you want before Valve tells you whether you can buy it [7]. Winners then have 72 hours to complete the order [6]. The 1TB tier costs $240 more for about 768 extra gigabytes, roughly 31 cents per gigabyte [34].

Gizmodo sets the Frame against Meta's line: $600 for a Quest 3 with 512GB, $350 for a Quest 3S with 128GB [16][18]. At its floor the Frame is about 1.8 times the Quest 3 and just over three times the Quest 3S [32][33]. Valve has charged this before. Its Index launched in 2019 at $1,000 including controllers and base stations, and the Frame's floor sits $9 above the $1,050 Steam Machine [29][25][30].

What the extra money buys is the Steam library by two routes. 130 titles are currently listed as "Great on Steam Frame" for native play on the headset's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 16GB of RAM, ARM hardware running a version of Linux, with Valve's Fex layer translating games built for x86 [10][20][21]. Everything else streams from a PC over the bundled dongle, and foveated streaming raises the bitrate where the wearer is looking inside a 110-degree field of view [22][23]. Gizmodo's review calls performance across less-demanding indie titles and graphically demanding ones "a mixed bag", and says streaming is where the headset is best [27][26]. Support for streaming from a Steam Machine arrives later, Valve told Gizmodo [24].

The test before registration closes has two parts. First, the total of the machine you would actually own, base plus charger plus strap kit, set against the price of the tier above. Second, the three games you expect to play in the first month, each one assigned to the native column or the streamed column. If all three land in streamed, the Frame is a wireless display for a PC you already own, and the $240 storage upgrade buys room for games that never get installed.

What to watch

  • Whether Valve opens general Steam Frame sales after the first lottery batch or keeps rationing through the waitlist.
  • The price and date for the modular enthusiast kit Valve's designers described to The Verge, neither of which the company has published.
  • How many titles pick up the "Steam Frame Verified" label, since ARM64 compatibility decides what runs without a PC in the loop.
