Walmart caved on tap to pay, and would not say Apple's name

Eleven years of refusal end on 24 August. The announcement lists cash, credit card and Walmart Pay, and never names the wallet that won.

What happened

  • Walmart starts accepting tap to pay at selected Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations on 24 August.
  • The announcement never uses the word Apple, and lists cash, credit card and Walmart Pay as the company tap to pay keeps.
  • Apple has said nothing in public; it took a Walmart spokesperson confirming to Business Insider that both Apple Pay and Google Pay are in.

Why it matters

  • What it sets up precedent The largest retailer on earth could not make its own wallet the only way to tap, so no chain below its size can plan on that position holding.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction TechCrunch calls the move a defeat in which Walmart admitted it was disadvantaging customers, while Walmart calls it added choice and told MacRumors last year that its app was the convenient option.
  • Who's exposed exposure With the app no longer the fastest way through the till, the purchase-level data underwriting Walmart's advertising and lending bets has to be bought with rewards rather than assumed.
  • Who has to decide decision The same fight now reopens one layer up, where Synchrony wants store cards usable by an agent inside ChatGPT, and Walmart has to decide whether to plug in or build its own again.

Look at the order of the list. Walmart's wording offers Tap to Pay as "a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay" [5], and Walmart Pay is still named first among the things that survive [11]. That is the position being defended, so it is worth being clear about what the position holds. A shopper paying through the app loads a card there and scans a QR code at the till [9], which keeps the transaction inside Walmart's own system and produces a record that a bank card tap does not [10].

That record is the raw material for the businesses Walmart has been assembling next to the checkout. It paid $1.4bn for the advertising platform Vibe.co in June [22], and TNW reported the same month that Parafin had taken a Goldman Sachs credit facility to embed lending inside Walmart, Amazon and DoorDash [23]. Ads and credit both price off knowing who bought what. A contactless tap does not end that, but it removes the arrangement that made the app the shortest route to leaving the store.

The naming is where the concession becomes legible. Google published its own post on the same day, headlined "Tap to pay with Google Pay is coming to Walmart", in which its payments VP and general manager Stavan Parikh named the retailer and set out the dates [14]. AppleInsider reported that Samsung Wallet will work as well, and read the absence of any wallet's name as deliberate [7]. The side that lost wrote the release. The side that won wrote the headline.

The timetable settles the question of whether any of this was hard. Every US store and club is due by the end of 2026 [2], fuel stations by the middle of 2027 [3], which counting from 24 August is roughly four months of work for the checkouts and ten for the pumps [18]. Eleven years of refusal [15], reversed on a schedule shorter than a product cycle. The readers were never the obstacle: contactless terminals have been standard for years [17], and Walmart has accepted Apple Pay in its Canadian stores for six years while refusing it at home [16].

Which leaves the number that frames the whole holdout. Apple Pay is accepted at 85% of US retailers [12], meaning the resistance had shrunk to 15% of the market [20], and Walmart was the largest name inside that remainder [15]. Kroger and Home Depot held out for years and gave in earlier [13]. CurrentC, the retailer consortium built to head off Apple Pay, shut in 2016 [8], the same year Walmart Pay went live, which makes the app ten years old at the moment of the reversal [21]. The QR code survives. The refusal does not.

What to watch

  • Whether Walmart Pay's share of transactions holds once tap to pay is live at every store, which is the only real test of the choice framing.
  • Whether Apple ever names Walmart in public, and whether the mid-2027 fuel station date slips once the checkout rollout is done.
  • Whether Walmart cooperates with Synchrony's push to put its store card inside ChatGPT, or builds an agent of its own instead.
