Apple makes Ask Siri the first result under Command+Space in macOS 27

Spotlight's new Search or Ask bar hands a typed question to Siri when you press Return, so the assistant now sits in the box Mac users already open dozens of times a day. It ships in beta, switched off, and English-only.

What happened

  • Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 14, with the launch of Siri AI as the headline addition to the Mac.
  • Spotlight now opens with a Search or Ask prompt, and pressing Return sends the typed query to Siri, whose answer expands inside the Spotlight window.
  • A dedicated Siri app stores each submitted query for later, opens from an expand button in the Spotlight result, and lets users pin conversations they return to.
  • Siri AI arrives in beta and switched off, with Settings telling the user that it is being rolled out gradually.
  • The more advanced features, including the improved Voice Mode, need an M3 Mac or newer with at least 12GB of RAM, leaving out the MacBook Neo and many MacBook Airs sold before 2024.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Utilities that sell fast keyboard search are now competing with a suggestion Apple ranks first in the same box, and a system default outranks every third party.
  • Who has to decide decision Anyone scheduling training or support for a Mac fleet has to plan for staggered access. Apple has not published a waitlist size or a date for the end of the beta.
  • Who's exposed exposure Users in the EU and China get the new Spotlight without the assistant behind it, so support queues there will field questions about a feature no local setting can switch on.
  • What's now possible capability A conversation begun on an iPhone, Watch or Vision Pro can be picked up on a Mac. That gives cross-device work a shared history the old Siri never kept.

Type a question into Spotlight in macOS 26 and the Mac offered iCloud Drive, Finder or the Web first. Ask Siri sat at the bottom of the result list. 9to5Mac's example was "why was Steve Balmer suspended from the NBA" [7]. In macOS 27 the same keystroke puts Ask Siri at the top [8]. Apple re-ranked a shortcut people already use to launch apps and open documents, and 9to5Mac's review calls Spotlight the place "where Mac users go to do things" [22].

The three reviews describe five ways to start a Siri request without opening an app first. There is Command+Space and the Search or Ask bar [6], holding the F5 microphone key or saying Hey Siri [17], and a right click on the desktop or on files selected in Finder [15]. Then Shift-Command-Space points Visual Intelligence at whatever is onscreen [10], and there is the Siri app itself [20].

On the second visit, users will notice that nothing is thrown away. In earlier versions an answer vanished once the request ended, and the ChatGPT integration in macOS 26 Tahoe had the same lapse [3]. Users now set retention themselves. The Siri panel in System Settings sets how long conversations are kept, whether the app opens a recent conversation or a new one, and how many lines appear in each preview [4].

WIRED reports that the Apple Foundation Models Siri runs on are based on Google Gemini [14]. Apple's visible work on the Mac this year went into placement. Asking "What's the best way to preserve an avocado?" in macOS 26 sent the request to ChatGPT, and in macOS 27 Siri answers it directly [18]. The two reviews split on how much that adds up to. 9to5Mac describes "a much improved and highly integrated experience that takes into account personal context while prioritizing privacy" [16]. WIRED's reviewer writes that Siri on Mac "never made a lot of sense, and I can't imagine it has ever been used much" [23].

For a team shipping a Mac app, the useful sort is which of your features a user reaches by typing and which they reach by clicking inside your own window. For typed queries, Siri is now the first result. Whether Siri can operate your app is a separate question. MacRumors describes the Search or Ask bar as able to find information in apps such as Mail and Photos and to "take actions in supported apps" [9]. MacRumors does not list which third-party apps qualify.

This is built for the person who presses Command+Space forty times a day and would rather not open a browser tab to ask something. For that person, the measure of whether it worked is not how many first queries get typed in launch week. It is whether saved conversations get reopened. The app gives users a pin button for the ones they come back to [1]. Underneath all of it, the fleet question is unchanged: macOS 27 runs only on Apple Silicon Macs [11].

What to watch

  • Whether Apple publishes a waitlist size or a date for taking Siri AI out of beta.
  • Which third-party Mac apps turn up in the set where Siri can take actions from the Search or Ask bar.
  • Whether EU and China availability arrives with the same Spotlight ranking or a different default.
