YouTube's European price rise asks permission, and cancels the people who ignore it
A notice to a Romanian subscriber puts Premium up about 10% and ends the plan if nobody clicks. Outside the EU the same rise applies itself. The mechanic is the story.

What happened
- A YouTube Premium price-change notice seen by TNW was sent to a Romanian subscriber on Friday, moving the individual plan from RON 29.00 to RON 32.00 a month, under a heading reading "Action Needed".
- The Romanian individual-plan increase from RON 29.00 to RON 32.00 is a rise of about 10%.
- The notice says "To keep your Premium benefits, you will need to accept the new price" and "If you take no action by October 10, 2026, your subscription will end before the new price takes effect."
- Under the notice, doing nothing does not mean paying more; it means being cancelled.
- Subscribers who accept the new price see the change take effect on 12 October.
Why it matters
YouTube is putting Premium prices up across Europe, and in at least one country it is doing it by asking: a price-change notice seen by TNW and sent to a Romanian subscriber on Friday moves the individual plan from RON 29.00 to RON 32.00 a month under a heading that reads "Action Needed" [s1c1][s1c2]. The mechanic is more consequential than the number, because doing nothing does not roll the customer onto the higher price, it ends the subscription [s1c3][s1c4].
The notice says: "To keep your Premium benefits, you will need to accept the new price," and "If you take no action by October 10, 2026, your subscription will end before the new price takes effect" [s1c3]. Subscribers who agree see the change on 12 October [s1c5]. The email lists what the money buys before it names the figure: ad-free and downloadable video, background play, and more than 300 million tracks on YouTube Music [s1c6]. The stated reason is to "continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch" [s1c7]. Google sent it as what it calls a mandatory email service announcement [s1c8], which is the only part of the flow that does not depend on the customer noticing.
Outside the EU the same rise applies itself. In Singapore the individual plan goes from S$13.98 to S$15.98 and the family plan from S$27.98 to S$31.98, according to Digital Trends citing the Straits Times, with existing members moved automatically after at least 30 days and nothing to click [s1c9][s1c10]. The US individual plan went from $13.99 to $15.99 in April, and Digital Trends led its coverage on the absence of any advance notice [s1c11][s1c12]. TNW attributes the difference to EU consumer law, noting that several member states require express consent for a price change and that the bloc's unfair terms rules void clauses permitting unilateral rises unless the consumer can see the reason and leave; YouTube has not said this is why [s1c13][s1c14].
There is no single increase to summarise. Romania is up about 10% [s1c2]. Singapore and Spain are around 14%, on Straits Times figures and a subscriber screenshot circulated on X [s1c15]. Android Authority reports Portugal and Italy going from EUR 17.99 to EUR 20.99, closer to 17% [s1c16], a gap of roughly seven percentage points from the Romanian rise [26]. Finnish subscribers report EUR 14.99 to EUR 16.99 [s1c17], which is about 13% [22]. Those Finnish and Portuguese numbers come from Reddit and ResetEra posts that Android Authority said were not yet official on Friday morning [s1c18]. European prices had been flat since 2024, so a rise four months after the American one reads as catch-up rather than a synchronised move [s1c19][s1c20].
Context on both sides of the ledger: in July YouTube said Premium would include Peacock at no extra cost from early 2027, Peacock's largest distribution deal [s1c21], while earlier this month it doubled the entry requirements for the Partner Program and, from 24 August, began counting a view from the first frame, which inflates view counts without moving earnings [s1c22][s1c23].
What to watch: whether the opt-in flow shows up in the rest of the EU or stays confined to states with express-consent rules [s1c13]; whether the 10 October deadline moves; and whether Peacock inclusion gets pulled forward into the re-consent message as justification [s1c21]. Regulators have circled adjacent ground already, with Italy's competition authority opening an antitrust probe into Microsoft 365's AI-driven price rise in June and the UK CMA examining in July whether Microsoft misled customers on the same increase, though neither case concerns YouTube or the mechanics of consent [s1c24][s1c25][s1c26]. Anyone running a subscription will be asked to price the difference between a rise that defaults to payment and one that defaults to cancellation.
