Ontario's self-driving pilot regulation is set to end months before Waymo's 2028 Toronto launch

Waymo wants its first Toronto riders in 2028, but Electrek reports Ontario's self-driving pilot regulation is revoked on October 13, 2027. The province has not said what replaces it, so the date depends on Queen's Park as much as on Waymo.

Waymo takes on $5bn of debt for the first time to fund more robotaxi cities

Waymo closed a $5bn loan from Pimco, Blackstone and Sixth Street, the first debt the Alphabet-owned robotaxi company has taken on. The money pays for more cars in cities it already serves and for launches abroad, and as a term loan it has to be repaid whatever the ride numbers turn out to be.

Tesla is moving its Austin robotaxi cutoff from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., with Elon Musk naming pets that are hard to see at night as the main problem to solve. Each added hour after dark now overlaps an open federal review of how well Tesla's cameras spot hazards in poor visibility.

California's SB 1246 requires robotaxi operators to send their own people to stuck cars

Gavin Newsom signed California's SB 1246, under which robotaxi operators can be penalized when a car blocks police or firefighters for more than 30 minutes. By July 2028, Waymo, Tesla and Zoox have to know how fast their own staff can reach a stalled car in each city.

Uber's London licence caps the robotaxi fleet at 15 cars, each with a paid supervisor

Fares match a standard UberX and there is no tip prompt, so the economics of this launch phase are not about cost per mile. Uber's own survey found more than 100,000 interested Londoners, against 15 licensed cars.

Texas has authorized 45 Cybercabs for a Tesla line built to make 125,000 a year

The Austin launch settled where riders can find a Cybercab. Tesla's July letter, which dropped the car from its 2026 volume-production list, still settles how many of them there can be.
