Self-supervised denoising lets an unsupervised pipeline map crystals in noisy 4D-STEM data

Kamijo and colleagues built a pipeline that denoises 4D-STEM scans without clean training images and then sorts crystal components automatically. It is aimed at beam-sensitive materials such as polymers, whose low-signal diffraction data are especially hard to analyse.

Disrupting the axon's inner scaffold left the pearls in place

Johns Hopkins reports that mouse axons preserved by high pressure freezing are beaded at the nanoscale, and says that shape may help set how fast signals travel, a variable the textbook drawing of a smooth tube leaves out.

Trace oxygen switches boron nitride nanopores from circular to triangular

For nearly twenty years, triangular pores in hexagonal boron nitride were credited to the electron beam. A Vienna group ran the irradiation in ultra-high vacuum instead, got circles, and then dialled the triangles back in with a little oxygen.

Vienna's plan to put a trapped-ion quantum computer inside an electron microscope

The result is mathematical rather than measured: entangle each electron with an ion, combine across electrons, and fewer electrons buy the same signal. No factor is stated anywhere.
