Apple's first 2nm iPhone chip reportedly uses base N2 as rivals eye more advanced node
The A20 Pro's 2nm debut comes with its Arizona volume unnamed and its node a step behind what Qualcomm and MediaTek are expected to use, while the one cost Apple has actually priced into the sticker is memory.
The Investor · Invest desk
What happened
- John Ternus used his first iPhone launch as chief executive to introduce the A20 Pro, which powers both the iPhone 18 Pro and the Duo and is, per Tom's Hardware, the first 2nm chip in an iPhone.
- CNBC reports the chip is built on TSMC's 2nm process with production currently limited to Taiwan, while Apple has committed to making some iPhone chips at TSMC's new Arizona fabs.
- Apple has broadened memory sourcing beyond Samsung Electronics to SK hynix and Kioxia, according to Financial News, as HBM allocation for data centres tightens LPDDR supply.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Nobody can model the Arizona pledge: with no share of A-series output and no wafer start date, a US supply-chain re-rating off this launch rests on a sentence rather than a schedule.
- What it costs cost Buyers are funding more than the visible component move, since the $100 pass-through runs about 2.5 times the $40 rise in a 12GB LPDDR5X module quote.
- Who's exposed exposure Leaving the US Pro Max modem unnamed on its own specifications page keeps Qualcomm inside the flagship socket Apple built the C2 to reclaim.
- Who has to decide decision Anyone comparing 2026 flagship silicon now has to price a node split, with Apple's performance claims resting on base N2 and its rivals' on the refined N2P.

Siri AI stops at the iPhone 15 Pro while iOS 27 reaches back to the 11Confirmed2 publishers
A 12GB LPDDR5X module cost $30 early last year and around $70 early this year, according to Financial News [13], a move of roughly $40 a module, or 133 per cent [15], and it is the only input in this launch with a public price history. Apple's answer was $100 on the starting prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, taking them to $1,199 and $1,299, which Reuters attributes to rising memory costs [10]. So the sticker moved by about two and a half times the module quote anyone can see [16], and while a module quote is not Apple's contract price (nobody publishes that), the pass-through works out at about 9 per cent on a $1,099 base [17].
The Duo carries the same cost in a different shape. It starts at $1,999, roughly $100 above Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold at comparable base capacities, with up to 2TB of storage against a 1TB ceiling on either rival [11], and a reported 12GB of RAM against the up to 16GB in Samsung's folding line, a capacity Apple has not officially disclosed [20]. Doubling NAND is the cheap way to look generous; DRAM is the line actually under pressure, because memory makers are steering capacity to HBM for data centres [13], so the specification Apple leads on is the one that costs least to lead on. Apple also widened its memory sourcing beyond Samsung to SK hynix and Kioxia [12].
On silicon, TSMC's 2nm output currently sits in Taiwan, and the Arizona commitment covers "some iPhone chips" with no share and no start date attached, per CNBC [5]. Apple did not name the node either, and NoteBookCheck reports the A20 Pro is expected on base N2 while Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro go to the more advanced N2P [18]. Apple's first 2nm part was the M6 in August [6], so this is a second product loaded onto base N2 capacity, and the headline gains (a seven-core GPU up 40 per cent generationally, memory bandwidth up 50 per cent) [4] land on the node that is available rather than the node that is newest. The Qualcomm exit is unfinished on the same page: Apple's specifications list the C2 for the iPhone 18 Pro and name no modem for the US Pro Max, which MacRumors reads as possibly a supply constraint, given the C2 also powers the Duo [9][19].
This launch prices memory and defers geography, a contestable reading. The counter-thesis is decent, that an Arizona commitment is worth more as tariff and political insurance than as a wafer count, and that Apple would take base N2 volume over N2P refinement precisely because insurance needs volume [5][18]. What separates the two readings is what happens to the $100 when memory rolls over out of the upcycle TrendForce dates to the second half of 2025 [14], since a company absorbing the cycle would hold price steady on the way up, while a company that repriced would keep the increase in place on the way down.
What to watch
- A named N2 start date, or a share of A-series output, attached to TSMC's Arizona fabs.
- LPDDR5X module quotes: a break in the upcycle TrendForce dates to the second half of 2025 tests whether the $100 was cost or margin.
- Teardowns and carrier listings for the US iPhone 18 Pro Max modem, which would show whether the C2 ramp is capacity-limited.

The A20 Pro packs a six-core CPU with two performance cores 20% faster than the previous generation plus four efficiency cores with neural accelerators, and Apple calls it a desktop-class processor and the fastest smartphone CPU.
- [4]
The A20 Pro's seven-core GPU delivers a 40% generational performance boost with up to 2x faster FP8 compute, its two neural engines hold 32 cores in total, and memory bandwidth jumps 50% to what Apple calls the widest memory interface in an iPhone.

Apple's first 2nm chip overall is the M6, unveiled in August; the A20 Pro shares some of the M6's architecture and features dual neural engines plus new CPU and GPU cores, according to Tom's Hardware.
- [7]
Apple revamped the A20 Pro's packaging to place silicon and memory dies side by side, keeping memory out of the SoC's thermal path and letting the dies connect directly to the vapor chamber.
- [8]
The redesigned vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro, helping Apple achieve up to 40% higher sustained performance than the 17 Pro and twice that of the 16 Pro, according to MacRumors.
- [9]
Apple's technical specifications page lists the C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro but does not specify a modem for the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and pre-launch reports suggested some iPhones could continue to use Qualcomm modems, according to MacRumors.

Rising memory costs are pushing the starting prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max up by $100, to $1,199 and $1,299, according to Reuters.
- [11]
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, roughly $100 above Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold at comparable base capacities, and offers up to 2TB of storage, twice the 1TB maximum of either rival, according to Reuters.

The quoted 12GB LPDDR5X module price rose by about $40 a module, a 133 per cent increase.
- [16]
The $100 increase in iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max starting prices is about 2.5 times the $40 rise in the quoted 12GB LPDDR5X module price.
- [17]
A $100 rise to a $1,199 starting price implies a prior base of $1,099 and a pass-through of about 9 per cent.

NoteBookCheck reports Apple stopped short of specifying the exact node, with the A20 Pro long rumoured to use TSMC's base N2 process, while Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro are expected to adopt the more advanced N2P node.
- [19]
Apple unveiled the C2 modem to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, and with the C2 also powering the iPhone Duo, supply constraints could be one possible explanation for the modem discrepancy, according to MacRumors.
