Nasdaq drops 2.15% as CoreWeave swaps imply over 60% odds of default in five years
Nasdaq Composite fell 2.15% on Oct. 16 as worries about AI data center debt hit chip and cloud stocks. The credit evidence for that story is firmer than the oil evidence, and the two reports disagree on how far chips fell.

Key figures for CoreWeave: bond yields climbed past 15%; the more than 60% five-year default odds implied by swaps equal about 16.7% a year, a floor that assumes a flat hazard rate; shares fell as much as 11.91%.

What happened
- CoreWeave shares fell as much as 11.91%, while neocloud peers Nebius dropped 12.18%, IREN 11.19% and Oracle 4.64%.
- December Brent crude settled at $109.86 a barrel, up 3.72% and the highest since May 19, after briefly trading above $110.
- Non-technology names advanced, with Walmart up 0.80%, JPMorgan up 1.25% and Eli Lilly up 0.43%.
- Crypto Briefing said the Nasdaq logged its steepest weekly decline in 18 months.
Why it matters
- What it costs cost At those funding costs, each new data center CoreWeave finances has to clear a higher hurdle, so we'd expect fewer starts from it and similar lessors until spreads narrow.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Seoul Economic Daily names oil as a second drag on stocks, while Crypto Briefing attributes the fall to hot inflation data and data center debt worries, so the oil link rests on one outlet.
- Who's exposed exposure The companies that spend on AI capacity are in the same trade: Meta fell 3.72% and Microsoft 1.93%, and Crypto Briefing read that as anxiety spreading past hardware names.
- What it sets up precedent Crypto Briefing argues that AI firms hoping to list may meet pickier buyers, after Anthropic's planned IPO drew valuation scrutiny despite 45% sequential revenue growth in the third quarter.
Crude does not look like the main driver of the split. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.15% [1] and the Dow 0.34% [2], a gap of 1.81 points [17], on a day when Brent also rose [11]. A selloff led by oil would be expected to reach the Dow harder than that.
The credit leg is better documented. Market pricing implied a probability above 60% that CoreWeave would default within five years [3]. On a flat annual hazard rate (our assumption), that works out to at least 16.7% a year [18], and Crypto Briefing reported that yields on the company's bonds had climbed past 15% [10], so the swap and the bonds put the same borrower in the same range. Nvidia, which Crypto Briefing describes as CoreWeave's backer [5], fell 1.43%, against 5.95% for AMD and 5.63% for Micron [12].
The chip-index figure is less settled. Seoul Economic Daily put the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's fall at 3.83% [19]. Crypto Briefing put it at 1.8% and called it the sharpest drop since the April 2025 "Liberation Day" selloff [20]. The first figure is 2.1 times the second [21]. We cannot tell from the two reports which is closer, so the 3.83% rests on one publisher.
Rates have a documented route into the debt story. Crypto Briefing said September's CPI and PPI both came in hotter than expected, raising expectations for further Fed rate hikes [13], and Seoul Economic Daily said stocks were under pressure from the opening bell on concerns that high interest rates could increase the debt burden tied to AI infrastructure spending [6].
We think this is a credit story with a rates accelerant, or rather, a credit story that rates made visible: the builder with the record swap spread repriced first and chip stocks followed. The counter-thesis is an inflation selloff that started with the CPI and PPI prints and landed on CoreWeave because that is where the leverage sits. A one-session scare is a third reading.
We would be wrong if CoreWeave's swap spread and bond yield retrace while chip stocks keep falling, because the inflation data would then be the cause. We would also be wrong if stocks rebound while the spread stays at a record.
What to watch
- The next CPI and PPI prints, which Crypto Briefing says will shape expectations for the Fed's path.
- Whether CoreWeave's five-year swap spread and its bond yield, now past 15%, come off their highs while chip stocks are still falling.
- Whether December Brent holds above $110, the level it briefly crossed during the session.
