Samsung and SK hynix fall over 6% premarket as AI-return doubts reach Seoul
Seoul stocks fell sharply on Oct. 15 as U.S. inflation hit 3.7% against a 3.6% forecast and AI-return doubts grew. Yonhap had the KOSPI opening 5.59% lower, and en.sedaily.com had Samsung and SK hynix each down over 6% premarket.

|---|---|---|---|
| KOSPI at the open, Oct. 15 | 5.59% lower | 1 | |
| Nasdaq, overnight | 1.88% lower | 6 | |
| SK hynix ADRs, overnight | 4.02% lower | 7 |
What happened
- A lower close on Oct. 15 would give the KOSPI its seventh straight daily decline, the first run that long since Sept. 3-11, 2024.
- SK Square and Samsung Electro-Mechanics opened more than 7% lower, a steeper drop than the two chipmakers, while other large caps weakened across the board.
- Overnight on Wall Street, Nvidia fell 3.2%, Micron 4.1% and SK hynix's American depositary receipts 4.02%.
- CoreWeave's bonds, issued to fund data center expansion, yielded close to 15%, and its shares sank 15.46%.
- The implied probability of an October Fed rate increase at one point topped 50%, after the Beige Book confirmed the effect of surging oil, with WTI at $95.10 a barrel.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure On this evidence Korean chip stocks trade with U.S. neocloud credit: one session carried a CoreWeave yield near 15%, doubts about neocloud survival and a 6% premarket drop in Samsung and SK hynix.
- What it limits constraint Brokerages now judge the AI cycle by cash flow and funding stability, so a bigger capex announcement alone no longer lifts chip stocks.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Demand data and prices point opposite ways. Anthropic's quarterly revenue rose 46% to $16.8 billion, and analysts still said that was not enough to reverse sentiment.
Working back from Yonhap's opening print, the KOSPI closed the prior session at 6,008.81, or 8.81 points above 6,000 [12]. That fits en.sedaily.com's account of an index that barely cleared the mark [8]. The 5.59% gap down is nearly three times the 1.88% Nasdaq decline that preceded it [13], and Seoul had already lost six sessions in a row [4]. The SK hynix comparison is looser but points the same way: its American depositary receipts lost 4.02% in New York [7], while the Seoul shares were down more than 6% in Nextrade premarket trading [3], a gap of about two points or more [14] between two different venues and hours.
Two explanations are on offer, and the sources do not rank them. The CPI beat was one-tenth of a point [16], small for a 5.59% index drop, yet it arrived with the 10-year Treasury yield in the high 5.1% range and the dollar index at an 18-month high of 102.94 [10]. That is a discount-rate story. We think the funding story explains more of the size, because chips fell harder than the index they trade within: Nvidia's 3.2% and Micron's 4.1% are 1.7 and 2.2 times the Nasdaq's 1.88% [15], and a rates shock should hit long-duration tech more evenly. The counter-thesis is that Seoul was carrying six sessions of selling [4] into a macro shock and would have fallen on rates alone. We would be wrong if TSMC's results, due during the session [18], reassure on AI demand and Korean chips fall anyway.
Gartner's figures come down to a subtraction. Cumulative AI infrastructure investment of $7 trillion for 2026 to 2030 against data center revenue of $3.6 trillion [22] leaves a gap of $3.4 trillion [25], and revenue covers 51.4% of the spend [26]. Gartner's stated number for assets at risk of impairment is as much as $3.5 trillion [22]; the source does not explain the $0.1 trillion difference. All of it is projection. En.sedaily.com presents the figure that more than 80% of neocloud providers will fail to become self-sustaining as market pessimism [24].
Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, was cautious about a quick recovery. "There are limits to reversing the trend on bargain hunting alone," Han said [19]. He added that after five or more consecutive sessions of sharp losses, "the market has tended to confirm a bottom and revert to the mean rather than stage a V-shaped rebound" [20].
What to watch
- TSMC's earnings during the Oct. 15 session: a strong print with Korean chips still falling would point to rates, not AI funding, as the driver.
- Whether the KOSPI holds its previous low, which Kiwoom's Han Ji-young names as the main point to watch.
- Whether implied odds of an October Fed hike stay near the 50% level they topped at one point, and whether the 10-year yield holds in the high 5.1% range.
