Bitcoin falls through $82,180 support to an intraday low near $80,800

Bitcoin extended its selloff on Oct. 8, falling through the $82,180 support level to an intraday low near $80,800, CryptoSlate reported. The next cluster of liquidations that Glassnode models below that low sits near $75,000, about 7% further down.

What happened

  • A morning bounce on Oct. 8 from $82,179.86 toward $83,211.83 faded, leaving Bitcoin near $82,500 on Bitstamp at 11:30 a.m. UTC.
  • CoinGlass counted more than $1 billion of liquidations over 24 hours, with $930 million of that on long positions.
  • A day earlier Glassnode had modeled long liquidations clustered at $81,700 to $83,300 and large Binance bids at $81,000 to $81,250, and price went through both.
  • Futures pricing cited by Fed Governor Christopher Waller assigned an 85% chance to at least one rate hike by December, even with an October hold expected.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint A rebound has to recruit new cash the rally itself did not attract in size, because existing holders repricing their coins supplied most of the 30-day realized-cap gain.
  • Who has to decide decision An October Fed hold leaves the hike path into 2027 in place, so anyone adding Bitcoin risk now carries it through CPI and two FOMC meetings at current yields.
  • Who's exposed exposure Short sellers become the forced buyers if bulls do reclaim $85,500, since Glassnode's largest one-year cluster of liquidations above price begins at $87,100.

Bitcoin.com News put the previous day's loss at more than $3,000 [4]. Wednesday's daily candle, or rather its open-to-close body, shows less: $85,544 to $83,274, or $2,270 [3][20]. Set Thursday's 4 a.m. UTC low of $82,179.86 against the $85,544.34 four-hour reading from Oct. 7 and the drop is $3,364 [11][4][21]. From the Oct. 2 high of $87,219.40 to the low near $80,800, Bitcoin has given back about $6,400, or 7.4% [3][1][22].

CryptoSlate is careful about cause [28]. It wrote that liquidations amplified the move, that treating macro forces as the trigger is a supported interpretation, and that proving the sequence would take intraday spot-flow and liquidation data [28]. The September FOMC minutes, released Oct. 7, said most participants saw another rate increase by year-end as probable [13]. The futures pricing Waller cited put nearly 80% on at least two hikes by March 2027 and 33% on three or more [15]. On Oct. 8 the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.305%, with the 2-year at 4.821% and Brent crude at $104.87 [6]. In CryptoSlate's reading, an October hold moves the next increase later on the calendar and leaves the path into 2027 steep [16].

Glassnode's Oct. 7 report put combined spot-exchange and US spot ETF volume near $6.8 billion a day, below roughly 90% of observations since January 2024 [17]. It estimated new money from ETFs, stablecoins and corporate treasury buying at $4.9 billion over 30 days, while realized cap rose $12.8 billion [18]. Existing holders repricing coins they already owned account for the other $7.9 billion, about 62% of the gain [27]. The ETF, stablecoin and treasury buyers whose cash would absorb forced selling supplied about 38% [27].

That morning Bitcoin.com News scored the daily technicals neutral, with nine bullish, seven bearish and ten neutral readings and an RSI of 50 [7]. Its $82,180 support and the 30-period exponential moving average, at $82,175, sat $5 apart, so the slide took price under both [5][8][23]. The 50-period EMA at $79,662 is still below the low, by $1,138 [8][24]. The report's daily pivot near $81,950 has also gone; losing it, the report said, would shift attention toward $80,000 [5][1].

CryptoSlate lays out levels on both sides [9][10]. If buyers rebuild above $85,500 on higher spot volume, a 5.8% climb from the low, they meet sell orders at $86,500 to $86,750 [9][25]. Past those orders is the biggest band of above-price liquidations Glassnode has mapped in a year, running from $87,100 to $95,900 and densest around $92,000; if price took that zone back, shorts could be forced to cover [9]. If buyers fail, Glassnode's next modeled cluster near $75,000 is the downside reference, 7.2% under the low [10][26]. A third outcome is a drift until September CPI on Oct. 14 and the Oct. 27-28 FOMC meeting settle it [19].

I think the $75,000 reference is the likelier test before any reclaim of $85,500 [10][9]. The rally now unwinding was mostly repricing, done on volume below roughly 90% of observations since January 2024, and futures price the rate path higher through March 2027 [27][17][15]. Against that, price has already run through the nearest modeled long cluster, and the cluster above $87,100 is the largest Glassnode has mapped in a year [12][9]. A daily close back above $85,500 on combined spot and ETF volume above $6.8 billion a day would prove this view wrong [9][17].

What to watch

  • Glassnode's next read on ETF, stablecoin and treasury inflows against realized-cap growth, the measure of whether new cash is replacing repricing.
  • The Dec. 8-9 FOMC meeting, the one futures pricing pointed to for at least one hike if October holds.
  • Whether CoinGlass liquidation totals tilt from longs to shorts on any move back toward the $86,500 sell orders.
