Ithaca's reported $1 billion for Bumble runs 2.6 to 3 times the stock's pre-news value
Ithaca Holdings is in advanced talks to take Bumble private at roughly $1 billion, a source told Reuters on Oct. 12. The stock jumped about 52% to $3.86 and still values the company at only 59% of that price, by our math.
The Investor · Invest desk
Key figures: Yahoo Finance puts Bumble's market cap before the news at $335 million. Reuters puts its valuation at Friday's close at roughly $389 million. Applying the 52% rise to $389 million, assuming an unchanged share count, implies about $591 million. Shares rose to $3.86 on Monday.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market cap before the news, Yahoo Finance | $335M | 17 | |
| Friday-close value, Reuters | $389M roughly | 18 | |
| Implied value after rise | $591M about | 11 | |
| Share price, Monday | $3.86 per share | 2 |
What happened
- The reported buyer, Ithaca Holdings, is a recently founded investment firm, according to Yahoo Finance.
- Bumble's second-quarter sales fell 15.2%, led by a steep drop in the Bumble app, and the number of paying users also fell.
- The price compares with a valuation of about $14 billion around Bumble's 2021 IPO.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction The two sources start from different bases, $335 million at Yahoo Finance and $389 million at Reuters, so the $1 billion is 3.0 times one and 2.6 times the other.
- Who's exposed exposure A buyer at $3.86 holds the gap between price and deal: if the talks fail and the stock returns to an implied pre-news close of $2.54, that is a 34% loss.
- Who has to decide decision If the talks close, the price is 7.1% of the IPO-era valuation, and the board will have stopped waiting on a turnaround that Yahoo Finance says has not stabilized the business.

Ithaca Holdings prices Bumble at under a tenth of its 2021 peak valueConfirmed12 publishers
Yahoo Finance's writer judges the reported price exorbitant [19], set against a market cap of $335 million before the news [17]. Against earnings the case is harder to make. If the $72.9 million of adjusted operating profit is the second-quarter figure (Yahoo's text sets it beside the quarter's results without labelling the period) [21], four times it is $291.6 million [26], and $1 billion is 3.4 times that [27]. The profit is also 22.9% below a year earlier [25] while sales fell 15.2% [5], so the margin narrowed, and annualizing a shrinking figure flatters the multiple.
That multiple depends on what the $1 billion is. The reports do not say whether it is equity value or includes debt, and Bumble and Ithaca did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment [3]. If debt sits inside the figure, holders receive less than the headline; if it sits on top, Ithaca pays more than 3.4 times [27].
The stock has already taken a view. With shares at $3.86 [2] and Reuters' $389 million valuation at Friday's close [18], and assuming the share count did not change, Bumble is worth about $591 million [11], or 51% of the reported price on Yahoo's smaller base [13].
In our view, "triple" is a ceiling on the uplift to holders: it holds only if the $1 billion is all equity and the deal closes. The counter-thesis is that the market is discounting an unsigned deal and nothing else, since Reuters calls the talks advanced [1]. A signed per-share price well above $3.86 would prove that reading right and ours too cautious. A price near $3.86 would show the gap is debt. If the talks collapse, the stock goes back toward its pre-news close.
Reuters reported earlier this year that Bumble was exploring a sale [4], so the pre-news valuation was set with a sale already on the table. Match is the public comparison: second-quarter sales up 1% and adjusted operating profit up 14% [22], with Hinge growing 22% [23]. Bumble's latest attempt to restart growth, Yahoo wrote, was to end its "women first" rule so that any person in a match can send the first message [6].
What to watch
- Bumble's third-quarter report: whether the sales decline eases from 15.2% and paying users stop shrinking.
- Any disclosure of how Ithaca, a recently founded firm, would finance $1 billion, and how much of the price is debt.
- Match's next report: whether Tinder reaches the daily active user growth Yahoo Finance says it is close to.

- cryptopolitan.comBumble is in advanced talks to go private in a deal worth about $1 billion, Reuters reported on Monday, October 12, 2026. Ithaca Holdings is the prospective buyer. The talks come as Bumble tries to win back users with AI. Neither company has confirmed a deal. Both declined to comment. Still, Bumble shares surged roughly 50% to $3.80 that Monday, their biggest one-day percentage gain on record. A $1 billion price tag for a $14 billion debut Founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd in 2014, Bumble went public in 2021 at a valuation of about $14 billion. Five years later, the proposed price tells a very different story. Paolo Pescatore, an analyst for PP Foresight, said the potential agreement is proof of Bumble's difficulties, adding that: Going private looks less like a strategic masterstroke and more like an admission that Bumble's current strategy is failing. The numbers a buyer would inherit Bumble's Q2 results indicate the reasons for the investors' concerns. Its revenue declined by 15.2% year-over-year to $210.5 million. The number of paying users also dropped by 16.4% to 3.2 million. Bumble reported a net loss of $127.9 million of which $169.3 million were impairment charges, even though the adjusted EBITDA represented $72.9 million. The slide started earlier. In 2025, the company registered a near 10% drop in revenue that amounted to approximately $966 million, while its paying user base declined by more than 11% to approximately 3.7 million. Bumble Revenue and Paying Users Decline in 2025 and Q2 2026 Industry fatigue, or a Bumble problem Bumble's competitor, Match Group, appears to be doing better as revenue fell only 1% to $853 million in the second quarter. Meanwhile, net income increased by 36% to $171 million. Tinder also showed signs of improvement. Daily active users dropped by only 4% year-on-year, which was the smallest decline in the last 10 quarters. Hinge's revenue has increased by 22%. Match aims to bring Hinge's annual revenue to $1 billion by 2027. Dating-app fatigue remains a challenge. But Match's results suggest Bumble's issues range beyond just the users getting bored with swiping. Bumble vs Match Group Q2 2026: Revenue, Profit and User Trends Can AI pull users back, or push them away Bumble hopes its AI-led Bumble 2.0 can change that. The redesign brings richer, chapter-style profiles and the possibility of swipe-free dating. Its March unveiling helped send shares up more than 40%. Wolfe Herd had earlier floated AI dating concierges, as Cryptopolitan reported. Whether users want that help is less clear. A peer-reviewed study suggests confidence in algorithms can encourage AI dating adoption. Yet an SSRN working paper reported 54% fewer usage minutes and 62% fewer app openings among the AI adopters studied. Those findings do not represent all daters. At the same time, less expensive AI will make companion chatbots more attractive than dating apps. However, the use of these chatbots raises privacy and security issues, as noted by the Congressional Research Service. The opportunity remains substantial: Grand View Research estimates a $10.7 billion global dating-app market in 2026, reaching $17.9 billion by 2033. The challenge is converting AI features into users who stay, pay, and trust the platform
