China and North Korea open a 3,026-meter bridge after leaving it shut for 12 years
China and North Korea will open the 3,026-meter New Yalu River Bridge at a joint ceremony on the 15th, 12 years after it was finished, Xinhua reported. Trade was already rising before the new capacity opened, so the coming data will show whether the old crossing was the constraint.

Key figures: China-North Korea trade in the first half of this year was about $1.51 billion, against roughly $1.26 billion a year earlier, a figure marked unconfirmed. Last year's full-year trade had recovered to 98.1% of the 2019 level.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| China-North Korea trade, first half this year, about | $1.51 billion | 9 | |
| A year earlier, roughly | $1.26 billion | unconfirmed | 15 |
| Last year vs 2019 level | 98.1% | 10 |
What happened
- Trade in the first half of this year was about $1.51 billion, up 19.6% from a year earlier, before the new bridge opened.
- After completion the opening was put off, officially because of missing connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side.
- The ceremony follows a Kim-Xi appearance in September 2025, resumed passenger rail in March, a Wang Yi visit in April and a Xi summit in North Korea in June.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Trade is on pace to top its 2019 level without the bridge, so only growth above the current pace can be credited to the new span.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Pyongyang's stated reason for the delay was unfinished roads and customs; the analyst's was dependence on Beijing. A bridge that opens now implies North Korea has accepted that trade-off.
- What's now possible capability Chinese capital and raw materials from the three northeastern provinces can be tied to North Korean labor and processing bases such as Sinuiju, according to Lim.
- Who's exposed exposure The report says the link could in effect neutralize the sanctions regime on North Korea and slow any recovery in inter-Korean relations.

Dandong gets a second bridge to Sinuiju more than a decade after China finished its sideConfirmed3 publishers
Trade between the two countries was growing before the new span carried a vehicle. In the first half of this year it came to about $1.51 billion, up 19.6% from a year earlier [9], which puts the first half of last year near $1.26 billion [15]. Last year's full-year total of about $2.736 billion was 98.1% of the 2019 level [10], so 2019 was about $2.79 billion [16]. The first half was about 46% of last year's total [17]. If this year keeps that split, full-year trade lands near $3.27 billion [18], about 17% above 2019 [19]. That projection leaves the bridge out entirely, and a single year's seasonality is thin support for it.
The bridge raises the ceiling. Overland freight had been limited to one two-lane crossing, and the report says that capped volumes [3]. China estimates the new four-lane, 3,026-meter bridge can handle up to 20,000 vehicles and 50,000 passengers a day [8]. Without a current traffic count for the old bridge, the headroom cannot be sized.
The 12-year delay complicates the warming story. Jung Eun-yi, who heads the Korea Institute for National Unification's division for North Korean research, said: "With Sinuiju lacking the capacity to absorb the traffic, opening the bridge would have turned the city into a mere transit point rather than a growth hub" [5]. Sinuiju has since been built out with corporate offices and infrastructure [6], though the report did not disclose whether the connecting roads and customs facilities that were officially missing are now finished.
The diplomacy fits the timing. Kim Jong-un stood beside Xi Jinping at the September parade marking the 80th anniversary of China's victory in World War II, passenger rail resumed in March after six years, Wang Yi visited Pyongyang in April, and Xi traveled to North Korea in June [7].
Lim Eul-chul, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, said the bridge "will ease the logistics bottleneck at the aging Yalu River railway bridge and accelerate large-scale customs clearance in both directions" [13]. He also said: "It amounts to securing the means to maintain a harder line of severed inter-Korean relations" [12].
We think the bridge follows the recovery and does not drive it: trade and diplomacy moved first, and the span is the infrastructure catching up. The counter-thesis is that the 19.6% was the old crossing running at its limit, in which case the new capacity should produce growth well above that pace. A third outcome is Jung's transit point, with Chinese cargo passing through Sinuiju and little left behind. Second-half growth well above 19.6%, measured against the same months a year earlier, would show the cap was binding and our view wrong.
What to watch
- China-North Korea trade data for the second half of this year: growth well above 19.6% against the same months of 2025 would show the old crossing was the constraint.
- Any report on whether the connecting roads and customs facilities on the Sinuiju side are operating.
- Daily vehicle and passenger counts on the new bridge, measured against China's 20,000-vehicle and 50,000-passenger estimate.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the 14th that China and North Korea will hold a joint opening ceremony for the New Yalu River Bridge on the 15th.
- [2]
The New Yalu River Bridge is a four-lane, 3,026-meter bridge linking Dandong in China's Liaoning province with Sinuiju in North Korea; it was finished in 2014 and is opening 12 years after completion.
- [3]
Overland freight between Dandong and Sinuiju had been limited to a single two-lane crossing, the China-North Korea Friendship Bridge built in 1943, which capped trade volumes.
- [4]
The opening was put off after completion, officially because of shortfalls on the North Korean side such as missing connecting roads and customs facilities.
- [5]
Jung Eun-yi, director of the North Korean research division at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said: "With Sinuiju lacking the capacity to absorb the traffic, opening the bridge would have turned the city into a mere transit point rather than a growth hub." She said the underlying burden was that wider connectivity with China might deepen dependence on Beijing instead of translating directly into economic gains for Sinuiju.
- [6]
Sinuiju, barren at the time the bridge was finished, has since been transformed into a city filled with corporate offices and infrastructure.
- [7]
In September last year Kim Jong-un attended the military parade marking the 80th anniversary of China's victory in World War II and stood beside Xi Jinping; in March the two countries resumed international passenger rail service for the first time in six years; Wang Yi visited Pyongyang in April; Xi traveled to North Korea in June for a summit.
- [8]
China estimates the bridge can handle up to 20,000 vehicles and 50,000 passengers a day.
- [9]
Total China-North Korea trade in the first half of this year was about $1.51 billion, up 19.6% from a year earlier.
- [10]
Last year's full-year China-North Korea trade total of about $2.736 billion had recovered to 98.1% of the 2019 level, before the pandemic.
- [11]
The report says the closer link could in effect neutralize the sanctions regime against North Korea and slow any recovery in inter-Korean relations as Pyongyang accelerates its alignment with Beijing and Moscow.
- [12]
Lim said: "It amounts to securing the means to maintain a harder line of severed inter-Korean relations."
- [13]
Lim Eul-chul, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, said: "The New Yalu River Bridge will ease the logistics bottleneck at the aging Yalu River railway bridge and accelerate large-scale customs clearance in both directions."
- [14]
Lim said capital and raw materials from China's three northeastern provinces will be linked through the bridge with North Korean labor and processing bases such as Sinuiju, deepening vertical supply chain integration.
- [15]
First-half trade a year earlier was roughly $1.26 billion.
- [16]
The 2019 China-North Korea trade level was roughly $2.79 billion.
- [17]
The first half was about 46% of last year's full-year total.
- [18]
If this year's first half is again about 46% of the year, full-year trade would be near $3.27 billion.
- [19]
A $3.27 billion full year would be about 17% above the 2019 level.
