The HTML file tied to Claude Motion came from a free Claude account that cannot run it

Anthropic put Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion into beta on October 8. Motion is limited to Team and Enterprise, so the HTML file a free-tier user got from Claude was not Motion output.

Claude Motion is a Team and Enterprise beta Who can switch on Claude Motion and what it exports, set against what a Reddit post says free Claude and ChatGPT returned.

Claude Motion is a Team and Enterprise beta admins must switch on, off by default for enterprises; it exports MP4. Per a Reddit post, free Claude returned .html for a 30-second motion graphics request and ChatGPT an .mp4 with music. Desk inference: that HTML was not Motion output.

What happened

  • Motion has no video generation model inside: Claude writes code that animates text, charts, shapes and images, with no generated footage.
  • The same announcement took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta on every plan, Free included.
  • Dashboards now have their own section inside Claude's Artifacts, where before they were usually built in chat or the Claude Design workspace.
  • The dev.to piece says people have made more than 45 million docs, decks and designs inside Claude.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction The dev.to piece offers the HTML file as a verdict on Motion, yet its own plan limits put that file outside Motion. No source here shows a Team-seat Motion export, so the format question is untested.
  • What it costs cost Whoever budgets a Team plan pays for Motion in usage, because longer or more complex animations burn more than a typical message.
  • Who has to decide decision Teams that use the standalone Claude Design site have 67 days from the beta announcement before it closes on December 14.
  • What's now possible capability A reviewer can click a Dashboard number, ask Claude how it was calculated and open the exact code, a check that in a traditional BI tool usually means emailing the builder.

Start with what the Reddit user did. According to the dev.to piece, the user gave ChatGPT and free Claude the same brief, a 30-second motion graphics video about Reddit [13]. ChatGPT returned an .mp4 with music already added [13]. Claude returned an .html file, and converted it a few minutes after being asked [13]. Motion's own output path is MP4 export [2]. Free Claude has no Motion, because the feature is a Team and Enterprise beta [22]. Admins have to switch it on, and for enterprises it is off by default [4].

What Motion produces is an animation built from a Motion template. Because it is code, one word, number or timing can change while the rest stays put [6]. The dev.to author says that is also why the results look like animated slides, not movies [18]. A working motion designer in an r/MotionDesign thread called the output beginner-level, with no keyframes [16].

The mix-up with Design is documented. A top r/ClaudeAI thread titled "Just used Claude Motion for the first time and I'm genuinely impressed" ends with the poster writing "my bad, it's actually Claude Design, Animation." [14] The video in that thread pulled real stats about New Zealand house prices over 30 years [15]. The dev.to author puts the confusion down to naming. Shipping Motion to two plan tiers next to a feature that already does animations is, the author wrote, "how you get a launch where nobody's sure what they're reacting to." [17]

Neither source reports a first-hand Motion export. The dev.to author could not use the feature on a first try [12]. The one hands-on test is of Dashboards, by the writer behind The Datavist substack, who says that after about an hour of use it has promise [19]. A few prompts produced a Superstore dashboard with KPI cards, filters, tooltips and a summary that updated as the filters changed, and the writer never touched a chart [20].

The caveat concerns the user. Knowing what to change came from years of visualisation practice, the writer wrote, and "someone without that background would likely have accepted the first version and moved on." [21]

What to watch

  • A first-hand Motion export from a Team or Enterprise seat, showing whether the file arrives as MP4 or HTML.
  • December 14, when the standalone Claude Design site closes, and whether the Motion and Design mix-up persists once Design lives only inside Claude.
  • Whether Anthropic opens Motion beyond Team and Enterprise, the limit the dev.to author says leaves many commenters without access.
