Nvidia puts $400 million of equity behind every gigawatt CoreWeave has promised by 2030
Nvidia put $2 billion into CoreWeave stock at $87.20 a share, and both companies committed to more than 5 gigawatts of AI factories by 2030. The equity comes to about $400 million per promised gigawatt.
The Investor · Invest desk

What happened
- Nvidia has invested $2 billion in CoreWeave Class A common stock at a purchase price of $87.20 per share, the two companies said in a joint release.
- The same announcement expands their relationship so CoreWeave can accelerate the buildout of more than 5 gigawatts of AI factories by 2030.
- They also intend to test CoreWeave's SUNK and Mission Control software and work towards including it in Nvidia's reference architectures for Nvidia's cloud partners and enterprise customers.
Why it matters
- What's now possible capability CoreWeave's scheduler and control plane get a route into rival clouds through Nvidia's reference architectures, distribution a neutral software vendor could not buy at any price.
- What it limits constraint At about $400 million of equity per promised gigawatt, the $2 billion funds a thin slice of a 5 gigawatt programme, so debt markets and customer contracts still decide whether 2030 holds.
- Who's exposed exposure Nvidia now carries a position in a customer's stock from a basis of $87.20, an asset that can fall in value while the hardware orders keep shipping.
- What it sets up precedent Offering one cloud's operating software to global CSPs and enterprises sets up the expectation that Nvidia's other partners will be asked to run a competitor's stack.

CoreWeave's 16% bond yield puts a price on its $50 billion of debtConfirmed2 publishers
Two billion dollars at $87.20 a share buys about 22.9 million shares [1][14], and set against a stated target of more than 5 gigawatts of AI factories by 2030, the equity works out to roughly $400 million for every promised gigawatt, or 40 cents a watt [2][15]. Dated from the January 26 announcement, the target implies about 1.25 gigawatts a year [8][16].
The share purchase is the priced part. The companies also said they intend to leverage NVIDIA's financial strength to accelerate CoreWeave's procurement of land, power and shell [3], and the release does not specify what form that support takes [9]. The distinction decides the size of Nvidia's position: a guarantee standing behind site and power contracts would put far more at risk than the $2 billion on the share register [1].
The software terms reach furthest: the two companies intend to test and validate CoreWeave's SUNK and Mission Control software and work towards including those offerings in Nvidia's reference architectures for Nvidia's cloud partners and enterprise customers [4], and the release's own subhead describes an expanded relationship to offer CoreWeave software to global CSPs and enterprises [5]. CoreWeave's scheduler and control plane would then arrive at the clouds bidding against CoreWeave for the same GPUs, as vendor reference material. Michael Intrator, CoreWeave's co-founder, chairman and chief executive, said the expanded collaboration "underscores the strength of demand we are seeing across our customer base and the broader market signals as AI systems move into large-scale production" [11].
CoreWeave will also adopt Nvidia CPU and storage platforms, including the Rubin platform, Vera CPUs and Bluefield storage systems, across multiple Nvidia generations [6]. Each of those widens what Nvidia sells into a CoreWeave rack beyond GPUs, so part of the $2 billion returns as orders.
One reading of the document is vendor finance, in which Nvidia funds a buyer so the buyer can commit to more Nvidia hardware, and the land-and-power clause points that way [3]. The other is a treasury decision: buying stock in a customer whose contracted demand Nvidia can see better than most outside investors can, at a price Nvidia agreed. Nvidia said the investment "reflects NVIDIA's confidence in CoreWeave's business, team and growth strategy as a cloud platform built on NVIDIA infrastructure" [7]. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and chief executive, said "AI is entering its next frontier and driving the largest infrastructure buildout in human history" [10].
The investment covers one partner [12]. For spreading CoreWeave's operating approach across Nvidia's other cloud partners, the release names only the reference architecture as the channel [4]. Nvidia also lists its expectations for the expansion of the relationship among the forward-looking statements in the release [13], which puts the 5 gigawatts in the category of intention on the day it was announced. If Nvidia's filings later show a guarantee behind CoreWeave's site and power contracts, the $400 million a gigawatt is the smaller half of the exposure [15].
What to watch
- Whether SUNK and Mission Control actually appear in Nvidia's published reference architectures, and which cloud partners adopt them.
- CoreWeave's disclosed contracted revenue and financing against the roughly 1.25 gigawatts a year the 2030 target implies.
- Whether Nvidia extends a comparable equity purchase to another of its cloud partners. A second such purchase would make a repeating pattern visible.
