Disney hands its first CTO job to the executive it sent a cease-and-desist
Karandeep Anand becomes Disney's senior executive vice president and CTO on October 2, reporting to Josh D'Amaro. Disney expects an unspecified number of Character.AI engineers to follow him into a remit covering enterprise systems, data and AI.
The Engineer · Build desk
What happened
- Disney named Karandeep Anand its first chief technology officer on Friday, effective October 2, with the senior executive vice president title and a direct reporting line to chief executive Josh D'Amaro.
- Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist in September 2025 over user-created bots copying Elsa, Moana, Peter Parker and Darth Vader, and the platform took the disputed bots down.
- Anand spent 15 years at Microsoft, where Disney says he helped build Azure, then ran ads and business products at Meta's Facebook and was president and chief product officer at Brex.
- The day before the CTO announcement, Disney made insider Adam Smith chairman of its streaming business and created a new television franchise role for Joe Earley.
Why it matters
- What's now possible capability Disney gets to set the character-safety threshold itself, with the people who ran one at consumer scale, instead of writing letters to a platform whose filters it does not control.
- Who's exposed exposure The reputational harm Disney's lawyers described in the letter becomes its own operational risk once Disney runs the character experience, with no outside platform to send the demand to.
- Who has to decide decision Other rights holders weighing licensing deals with chatbot platforms now have a worked example of hiring the operator and part of the engineering team instead.
- What it limits constraint Interactive-character work will compete for the new CTO's time with Disney's enterprise systems, infrastructure and data platforms, all of which report to the same person.

Disney sets a $20 million opening bid for Character.AI's IP in Chapter 11Confirmed25 publishers
Character.AI's own roadmap describes the capability Disney is importing. Anand's initial product agenda there covered better model memory, improved discovery, clearer moderation decisions and fewer false positives from the safety filters [15]. Those last two items are one classifier setting pulled in opposite directions. Loosen it and personas that copy a rights holder's character, or misbehave while wearing it, stay up. Tighten it and ordinary role-play gets refused. Character.AI tuned that on personas its users invented, in a product built around users creating personalities and extending fictional worlds through ongoing conversation [10].
Disney's lawyers described the same failure from the receiving end. According to Axios' account of the September 2025 cease-and-desist, Disney argued the problem went beyond unlicensed use because inappropriate chatbot behavior could damage the reputation of its characters [9]. Character.AI said its users had created the bots, and removed the Disney characters after the demand [14]. The letter went to the company Anand was running, and Disney has now given him the CTO job [8][1].
For that filter work to transfer, the workload has to resemble the one it was built for. In one respect it will not. Disney owns the characters and the stories users already want to inhabit [10], so the set of personas is enumerable and licensed before a model runs. Classification gets easier. The cost of a single miss goes up, because the bad output is attributed to Disney. Disney has not tied Anand's appointment to a named consumer product [11].
This is the second time Character.AI has lost technical staff to a larger company through an executive's exit. Its founders, the former Google researchers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, returned to Google in 2024 alongside other employees under a technology-licensing and talent agreement [16]. Disney did not say how many engineers are following him [3]. Anand was named CEO in June 2025 after nine months advising the board [17]. Disney's letter arrived roughly three months later [21].
The mandate is broader than interactive characters. Anand will oversee enterprise systems, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product and engineering across Disney's business segments [7], reporting to D'Amaro, the theme parks veteran who took over from Bob Iger in March [5]. D'Amaro has described Disney+ as the digital center of a closer relationship with fans [18].
Character.AI said it wanted to work with rights holders on controlled, revenue-generating experiences built around their intellectual property [19], and in its announcement of Anand's departure it described recent work spanning interactive books, studio-produced microdramas and comics [12]. Runtimewire argues the hire puts that product thesis inside the rights holder, with direct control over tone, safety, distribution and commercialization [22]. The Economic Times leads instead on the legal record Anand is leaving behind: a wrongful-death suit tied to a teen's suicide settled in January, a May lawsuit over chatbot impersonation of doctors, and Disney's own September 2025 letter [13].
What to watch
- Whether Disney attaches a named consumer product to Anand's remit, and whether it puts licensed characters into conversation with users.
- How many Character.AI engineers actually move, and which parts of its safety and moderation stack they built.
- Whether the Verts test that puts TikTok fan videos on Disney+ becomes the distribution surface for interactive characters.
