What happened

  • One of the two sending wallets received 59,751 ETH from a Foundation address in 2016 and has since routed 49,751 ETH to Kraken, Crypto Briefing reported.
  • Similar flows from Foundation-linked addresses to Kraken were caught in late 2025, May 2026 and August 2026, according to Crypto Briefing.
  • In April 2026 the Foundation announced plans to sell 5,000 ETH through CoWSwap on a time-weighted average price schedule.
  • ETH traded near $2,555, up about 2% on the day and down about 6.85% over seven days.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint A deposit shows custody moved. Kraken has not said whether the ETH was exchanged for cash or another cryptocurrency or left in the account, and no withdrawal of proceeds was shown, so a sell signal is an inference.
  • Who's exposed exposure The 10,000 ETH the 2016 wallet received but has not sent to Kraken is worth about $25.55 million at $2,555, or 2.3 times this deposit, and the on-chain data does not say where it sits.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction crypto.news frames the move as raising questions about selling, while Crypto Briefing calls it potential operational activity tied to future projects or liquidity needs. The same wallet data supports both.
  • What it sets up precedent Crypto Briefing says earlier transfers of this kind drew analyst attention without typically producing an immediate market impact.

Crypto Briefing says only one of the two sending wallets has the long Foundation history [6]. crypto.news adds that the reported movement of funds does not establish that the Foundation kept ownership or control of the recipient wallets over the decade [10], and that a historical link to the Foundation is not confirmation that the Foundation authorized the latest transaction [9]. So the question is whether the Foundation sold, or rather whether it still controlled these coins at all.

The $658 average EmberCN attaches to the older deposits is the approximate market price when each transfer happened, crypto.news says, and not verified sale proceeds [4]. Applied to 49,751 ETH it comes to about $32.7 million [17]. At $2,555 the same coins would be worth about $127.1 million [18], 3.9 times as much [19].

The deposit fits three readings: a Foundation sale, a custody move with no sale, and a sale by a holder the Foundation no longer controls. We think the middle one is the likeliest. The Foundation announced its April sale of 5,000 ETH as a CoWSwap order [16]; this deposit went to Kraken with no official statement about its purpose [8]. At 4,393 ETH it is 88% of the April size [24]. The sources do not include ETH trading volume, so the deposit cannot be sized against daily turnover.

The counter-case is the Foundation's own policy. Its June 2025 framework allows periodic ETH sales through fiat off-ramps or on-chain exchanges [15], and a Kraken deposit is a plausible first step in an off-ramp. A Foundation disclosure that this ETH was sold, or proceeds traced off Kraken, would settle it against us. A run of further deposits from the same two addresses would weaken our reading without settling it.

What to watch

  • The size and timing of the next deposit from either sending address, 0x4c4...2b94 or 0x999...0229.
  • Any on-chain movement of the 10,000 ETH from the 2016 allocation that has not been sent to Kraken.
