Apple gates every new Siri AI feature to the iPhone 15 Pro and later

Wired's rundown of iOS 27 lists five new Siri capabilities and one hardware requirement covering all of them. The personal index is built on the handset, so the cutoff sits in the hardware and a server update leaves an older phone where it is.

What happened

  • Apple renames its assistant Siri AI in iOS 27 and adds personal-context answers, screen and camera awareness, native text writing, deeper in-app actions and a standalone Siri app.
  • The features are available on the iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max or later, a list Wired says extends to the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo.
  • Siri AI handles writing and editing itself; the older Siri generated text through an integrated ChatGPT plug-in.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint The index gets built and held on the handset. That leaves eligibility with the hardware; no server-side switch brings an older iPhone along.
  • Who has to decide decision Whoever writes the rollout note has to lead with model names. Two colleagues on the same iOS 27 build will get different answers to the same question.
  • Who's exposed exposure Anyone planning app features around Siri actions is aiming at a slice of updated users, and Wired's account leaves the size of that slice open.
  • What it costs cost For a user who wants personal-context answers on an ineligible phone, the price is a new handset.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro costs £100 more than last year's model

Wired says Siri AI spends time indexing texts, emails, calendars and whatever else is stored on the handset before it can answer anything personal [3]. A phone that misses the cut runs the same iOS build and keeps answering the way the old Siri did.

Siri has been on the iPhone since 2011, five years ahead of Google Assistant and eleven years before ChatGPT opened to the public [8]. The index is why the line falls where it does. Everything stays on the device, and Wired says nothing gets sent back to Apple [4]. The previous Siri generated text by handing the job to an integrated ChatGPT plug-in, and Siri AI does that writing itself [12]. Work done in a datacenter can reach any handset. An index built on the phone stays with the phones that can build it, and Wired says only the newest phones have the on-board silicon for the higher AI processing demands [9].

So the requirement is a model list, not a version number: iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max or later, including the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo [2]. The list covers part of one generation: the Pro and Pro Max of the 15 line qualify, and the standard iPhone 15 falls outside it [16].

All five feature groups Wired describes sit behind that single sentence [15]: answers drawn from messages and appointments, questions about what is onscreen or in the camera view, writing and editing where the user keeps final approval over the text [13], actions inside apps such as creating a calendar event or switching playlists [7], and a standalone Siri app that holds conversation history and syncs across Apple devices [14].

Wired puts no number on how many iPhones in use qualify, and gives no release date for iOS 27 [17]. What the article carries is a capability list, and it stops short of retention figures or any measure of how many people ask a second question once the first answer lands. The demonstration prompts are the personal ones. Wired's examples are "What day is my work appraisal happening?" and "Where did I say I'd meet Mom?" [5].

The problem lands on whoever writes the instructions. Release notes are keyed to iOS 27, so the version number ends up in the first line of the support article, where it is the wrong test. Teams planning app work against the rest of it have looser ground. Wired wrote that "Over time, deeper hooks into third-party, non-Apple apps should show up too." The verb is "should", and there is no date [18].

Two tests sort anything built on this. Whether the feature needs the on-device personal index, and whether the person using it can find out why it failed. Personal answers and photo search in the Photos app need the index [6]. Questions about the screen or the camera view need the same silicon anyway, and Wired notes the older route was to take a screenshot and hand it to Siri [10], or to use the new Siri mode by the shutter button in the Camera app [11]. Wired's account leaves the second test unanswered, so the model list belongs on the first screen of any instruction.

What to watch

  • Whether Apple's own support documentation adds any non-Pro iPhone 15 to the Siri AI list.
  • A date attached to the deeper third-party app hooks Wired says should show up over time.
  • Whether Apple publishes what a phone does when a Siri AI request exceeds on-device capacity.
