The Pixel 11's hardware changelog: a glass camera bar and seven grams
Three reviews of Google's 2026 flagship describe the same phone as last year's, at $100 more. What is actually new ships as software.

What happened
- 9to5Google's initial review says the outright biggest design change on the Pixel 11 is the full glass camera bar section.
- 9to5Google reports a weight reduction of around 7g versus the Pixel 10, which it calls genuinely noticeable.
- The Verge says the hardware is basically unchanged from the Pixel 10 except for new colors and a thinner camera bar, with the spotlight shifting to software.
- Ars Technica says Google made precious few hardware changes in its 2026 phones, shaving off a fraction of a millimeter here and dropping a gram there.
- The Pixel 10 was priced at $799, which The Verge previously called fair.
Why it matters
Google's Pixel 11 landed with a hardware changelog that fits in one sentence. According to 9to5Google's initial review, the biggest physical change is a full glass camera bar section, and the weight drops by around 7g [3][13]; The Verge describes the hardware as basically unchanged from the Pixel 10 except for new colors and a thinner camera bar [1], and Ars Technica says Google made precious few hardware changes in 2026, shaving off a fraction of a millimeter here and dropping a gram there [2].
The price moved more than the hardware did. The Pixel 10 started at $799 [14]; the Pixel 11 starts at $899 [15], a $100 or 12.5 percent increase year over year [26]. Base storage doubles to 256GB [16], implying 128GB before [27], and The Verge attributes the broader price rises to what it calls RAMageddon [32]. The 11 carries 12GB of RAM, the same as the base Pixel 11 Pro at $1,099, which The Verge notes is $200 more for similar day-to-day performance [5][6]; only the pricier Pro configurations get 16GB [7].
What actually distinguishes this generation is a software bundle. The Verge identifies Camera Looks and Magic Capture as the exclusive new camera features, and says Google withheld none of them from the non-Pro model [8][9]. The camera hardware is the same spec sheet as last year: a 48MP main, 13MP ultrawide, and 10.8MP 5x telephoto [10]. Camera Looks is a set of sensor-level presets, including a muted "Digi" and a black-and-white "Black Tie," which the reviewer says made shooting with a Pixel more fun than it has been in years [11]. That is the upgrade argument: a preset layer on unchanged sensors.
The rest of the software is thinner. 9to5Google reports that the new Tensor G6 feels identical to the G5 in daily use, that apps load marginally faster from cold start by milliseconds, and that the display still ships tuned to 60Hz by default rather than 120Hz [17][18][19]. The new Rambler dictation feature dumps text in one block after you tap the microphone rather than filling in as you speak, which 9to5Google calls not ideal, though it handles stutters and corrections well [20]. The Verge lists Proactive Assistance under The Bad as not worth upgrading for yet [21].
The genuine hardware work is remedial. Pixelsnap magnets are marginally stronger than last year [22], the buttons are less wobbly [23], wireless charging rises to 25W [24], and the flatter camera bar makes the base model more pocket-friendly [12]. Ars Technica's framing is the one operators should sit with: the design language has been the same for three generations while prices inch upward, and in its assessment Google's hardware has regressed in a few key areas [4][28]. Its conclusion is that Google is not only competing with Apple and Samsung but with the Pixels of yesteryear [29].
Two things to watch. First, whether the camera software stays exclusive to the 11 series, because on this hardware sheet the feature gate is doing the entire job of justifying $899 [8][10][15]. Second, a single-reviewer signal worth tracking rather than repeating: 9to5Google reported severe connection problems on 5G with the Three network in the UK while running Proton VPN or Google Pixel VPN, fixed only by cycling Airplane Mode, and noted no one else on the team saw modem issues [30][31]. Also note that the flat Pixel 11 models remain eSIM-only in the US, while international versions and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold keep SIM slots [25].
