Two Scimplify customers, Henkel and Teknor Apex, put money into its $25M round

Scimplify, an Indian specialty-chemicals startup, raised $25 million in a round that Henkel and Teknor Apex, two of its customers, joined as investors. The growth figures are the co-founder's own, and the report does not tie them to Chinese supply being replaced.

What happened

  • Hitachi Ventures led the all-equity strategic round, and existing backers Accel India, Bertelsmann India Investments, Omnivore and 3one4 Capital also took part.
  • A person familiar with the deal put the post-money valuation at $250 million, up from $150 million after a $40 million Series B in March 2025.
  • Co-founder Sachin Santhosh told TechCrunch that annualized revenue is about $200 million, triple a year earlier.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction The pitch is less dependence on concentrated supply, yet nearly all production sits in one other country for now, so a buyer swaps one concentration for another until U.S. and Japanese capacity exists.
  • Who has to decide decision A buyer deciding whether to pilot has to ask which kind of project its own material is, since the fast turnaround was reported for some cases only.
  • Who's exposed exposure Nearly half of revenue now depends on demand the report attributes to AI buildout and ongoing wars, so the $400 million target is tied to those sectors holding up.

On a project plan, a second source for a specialty chemical looks like a purchase order. In the report it is a different job: developing production processes and qualifying facilities against stringent quality standards [9]. Such work typically takes 12 to 18 months [14]. Co-founder Sachin Santhosh told TechCrunch that in some cases Scimplify has gone from a customer's requirements to finished material in two months [14].

The pitch is the AI platform. Scinode identifies production routes and facilities and tracks quality and regulatory requirements, and Santhosh said it uses specialized agents for research, manufacturing and quality control [10]. Santhosh said each agent works backward from the customer's requirement to solve for what that customer would want [11]. What a buyer receives comes out of partner factories, after the process is developed at Scimplify's research facilities in Bengaluru and Hyderabad [10]. The company's own scientists and engineers oversee production across a network of more than 500 facilities [22].

The growth is easier to see by geography and sector. Customers outside India now contribute more than half of revenue, against less than 5% about 18 months ago [8]. Energy, electronics and defense make up about 45% to 50% of a run rate near $200 million, or roughly $90 million to $100 million [12][6][19]. A year ago the run rate was about a third of that, near $67 million, and those sectors were under 15% of it, so under $10 million [6][12][20]. On Santhosh's figures, revenue from those sectors rose more than ninefold [21]. The report says AI is fueling demand for materials used in electronics and energy infrastructure, and ongoing wars are driving demand from defense [13].

Henkel and Teknor Apex are customers and now shareholders [3]. In our view, a buyer that relies on a supplier to run process development and facility qualification has an obvious reason to want that supplier funded. The startup declined to disclose its valuation, and the $250 million figure comes from a person familiar with the deal [5][4]. On that figure the round prices Scimplify at about 1.7 times its Series B valuation and 1.25 times its stated run rate [18][17]. Santhosh said the company's EBITDA has been positive for the last two months, and he expects it to post an after-tax profit this month [24].

We would sort each material you buy on two axes: whether its supply sits in China or a handful of countries, and whether qualifying a new source takes a year or more. Concentrated supply with slow qualification is the one box where a two-month claim is worth testing, and we would start a pilot there. Concentrated supply with fast qualification can wait for a quote when the need arrives. The other two boxes need no new supplier on this logic. The tradeoff is geography: about 90% of Scimplify's manufacturing is in India today, with U.S. and Japanese production planned over the next year [23], so a pilot buys faster qualification and a second source that sits mostly in one country.

For the pilot, we would ask the supplier to put two things in writing: the country of manufacture for your volume and the qualification timeline for your material. The company says it helps customers set up alternative sources for materials concentrated in China and a few other countries [16]. It is working on tungsten derivatives from scrap and on rare earth materials, both heavily dependent on China [15], so a buyer in either category should ask what stage that work has reached.

What to watch

  • Whether Scimplify opens U.S. and Japanese production within the next year, as Santhosh said it plans to.
  • Whether the tungsten-from-scrap and rare earth work turns into commercial supply for customers.
  • Whether the company reaches its $400 million run-rate target and the after-tax profit Santhosh expects this month.
