Xiaomi's 8,999-yuan 18 Fold sets the price Apple's first foldable has to argue against
Huawei's Mate XT 2 is a third-generation tri-fold running a chip Washington's export controls were meant to prevent. Xiaomi has already published the yuan number Apple's first foldable will be measured against.
The Product Desk
What happened
- Huawei unveiled the Mate XT 2 tri-fold on Monday, two days before Apple is expected to show its first foldable iPhone, and the phone goes on sale in China on 10 September.
- The Mate XT 2 opens to a 10.2-inch display, carries a battery above 6,000mAh and uses a redesigned hinge meant to soften the crease that has followed folding screens since the format appeared.
- Apple's foldable is still unannounced, and TNW reports it selling above $2,000, roughly twice what Xiaomi is charging in China.
Why it matters
- Who has to decide decision Apple's first fold has to justify roughly double the Xiaomi price while dropping a camera class, which makes thinness the thing buyers are being asked to pay a premium for.
- Who's exposed exposure The two-day head start is aimed at the one market where Apple's premium position is already being squeezed by domestic rivals, so the timing lands on its weakest ground rather than a neutral one.
- What doesn't add up contradiction TNW treats the Kirin 9050 Pro as a chip the controls were meant to prevent, and also reads those controls as producing a slower path rather than no path; the two framings point to different verdicts on what the policy achieved.

On 10 September a buyer in China can hand over money for a folding phone whose hinge is on its third revision [17][1][19]. On 9 September Apple will describe one, and according to TNW's reporting rather than any Apple announcement, that device has a 7.8-inch inner screen, a 5.3-inch cover display, no telephoto lens and Touch ID moved into the power button [18][6][8].
The spec floor does not sit where the launch calendar suggests. Apple's reported inner display is 0.2 inches larger on the diagonal than the Xiaomi 18 Fold's 7.6-inch panel [15], so on screen size the first attempt clears one of the incumbents. Against the tri-fold it is not close: 10.2 inches versus 7.8 is roughly 31 percent more diagonal [14]. What Xiaomi puts in the same box is a 200MP main camera, 67W wired charging and LPDDR6 memory running on its own Xring O3 [5], while the reported Apple package drops the telephoto entirely [6].
The reference price is Xiaomi's alone. The 18 Fold lands at around 8,999 yuan [5], and Huawei has not published Mate XT 2 pricing beyond its Chinese pre-order configurations [4], so there is exactly one published number in the market to be measured against. TNW puts the foldable iPhone above $2,000, roughly twice the Xiaomi figure [7].
The Kirin 9050 Pro is the chip Washington's export controls were meant to keep off the market. TNW describes it as built on Huawei's own newer process, a chip the company was cut off from making when Washington closed its access to advanced foundries [20]. Read next to the Xring O3 and Xiaomi's custom 3nm chip for intelligent driving [5][12], the controls look like a detour rather than a wall, which is TNW's own reading: they reshaped the equipment trade and pushed Chinese design onto domestically available nodes, producing a slower path to competitive parts instead of no path [9]. Distribution is where they still bite. Huawei phones ship without Google services, which keeps them out of Europe and the United States in any volume, so the Mate XT 2 meets Apple only inside China [2], and European buyers get the format as a Samsung-or-Apple choice while the harder engineering happens in a market they cannot buy from [3].
None of this arrives with the numbers that would settle it. There is no retention figure here and no measure of how often anyone still unfolds the thing in month six [16]. The case for arriving late is a pattern from large screens, 5G and the stylus, where Apple shipped a more polished version and took the profitable end of the market anyway [13]. Those were features you add, but a hinge is a mechanism that wears, and the crease is still visible on every folding phone after seven years of iteration [11][10].
For anyone shipping a first-generation device into a category someone else has been grinding at, two axes do the work: whether the known defect sits on a surface the user touches every session, and whether a competitor has been iterating on that same defect for years. Where both are true, arriving late with polish is a claim you demonstrate on the shipping unit, not a precedent you carry over from the last category. Apple's reputation for not shipping a compromise that visible [11] is the standard its first fold gets held to, in the market where its share is already under sustained pressure from domestic premium phones [21], against a hinge on its third try [1].
What to watch
- Mate XT 2 pricing outside the Chinese pre-order configurations, which Huawei has not published.
- Whether Apple's Wednesday device ships with a visible crease and confirms the reported omission of a telephoto lens.
- Any route back to Google services or European distribution for Huawei, which is the constraint its silicon does not touch.

Ranked by verification strength, evidence, and original report placement.
- [1]
The Mate XT 2 is a third-generation tri-fold rather than a first attempt.
- [2]
Huawei's constraint is distribution rather than engineering: its phones ship without Google services, which keeps them out of Europe and the United States in any meaningful volume, so the Mate XT 2 competes with Apple only inside China.
- [3]
European buyers will choose between Samsung and Apple while the most aggressive foldable engineering happens in a market they cannot buy from.
- [4]
Huawei has not published Mate XT 2 pricing outside its Chinese pre-order configurations.
- [5]
Xiaomi's 18 Fold runs the company's proprietary Xring O3 with LPDDR6 memory, a 7.6-inch folding display, a 200MP main camera and 67W wired charging, at around 8,999 yuan.
- [6]
Reporting on the expected foldable iPhone specifications describes a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.3-inch cover display, with no telephoto lens and Touch ID in the power button in place of Face ID.
- [7]
The foldable iPhone is expected to sell for above $2,000, roughly twice what Xiaomi is charging in China.
- [8]
Apple's foldable remains unannounced, so every specification attributed to it is reporting rather than fact.
- [9]
TNW's reading is that the export controls reshaped the equipment trade and pushed Chinese design toward custom silicon on the process nodes available domestically, producing a slower path to competitive parts rather than no path at all.
- [10]
The foldable format has existed since 2019, the mechanical problems are well understood, and companies that have iterated for seven years have accumulated manufacturing knowledge that a first attempt cannot shortcut.
- [11]
Every folding phone has a crease, seven years of engineering have not removed it, and Apple has built a reputation on not shipping a compromise that visible.
- [12]
Xiaomi has been building silicon capability in public, including a custom 3nm chip for intelligent driving.
- [13]
Apple was late to large screens, late to 5G and late to stylus support, and in each case arrived with a more polished implementation and took the profitable end of the market anyway.
- [14]
The Mate XT 2's 10.2-inch open panel is about 31 percent larger on the diagonal than the 7.8-inch inner screen reported for Apple's foldable.
- [15]
The 7.8-inch inner screen reported for Apple's foldable is 0.2 inches larger on the diagonal than the Xiaomi 18 Fold's 7.6-inch folding display.

The source material carries no retention, repurchase or usage-frequency figures for foldable phones, only specifications, prices and Apple's history in earlier categories.
