Apple's iPhone 18 Pro storage tiers rose five times as much as its base price

Apple added $100 to the price of every iPhone it carried into the new lineup, and the storage configurations that corporate fleets actually order went up by several times that.

What happened

  • Apple set the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, each $100 above the opening price of last year's equivalent model.
  • Higher storage tiers on the new Pro models rose by as much as $500, five times the increase applied to the base configuration.
  • Apple also added $100 to the iPhone 16, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, putting them at $799, $699, $899 and $1,099.
  • The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max were discontinued, taking last year's Pro models off the price list.
  • The foldable iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB and runs to $3,199 for 2TB, with pre-orders from October 16 and launch on October 23.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost A 250-handset refresh costs $25,000 more on the base increase alone, and the department paying it wrote its number against last year's list.
  • What it limits constraint With last year's Pro models gone, trading down recovers nothing: the entry price of the lineup rose by the same $100 as everything above it.
  • What's now possible capability Photo data signed at capture gives claims and inspection work verifiable file provenance from a standard-issue phone.
  • Who has to decide decision Fleets still running iPhone 14s, 15s and 16s keep free satellite access for another year, which strengthens the case for deferring a cycle.

Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12, and phones ship on the 18th [3]. That leaves six days for whoever signs the purchase order to settle the line that moved by more than $100, which is the storage tier.

Run it on 250 handsets. If the configuration your fleet deploys is one of the tiers that took the full $500, the order costs $125,000 more than the equivalent order a year ago [19]. MacRumors did not specify which configurations took the full increase. The foldable iPhone Duo's own price list carries a $1,200 storage spread inside one product: $1,999 for 256GB, $3,199 for 2TB [1][12].

Teams talk about storage as headroom, then buy a tier up because somebody ran out last time. The purchase order commits that money before anyone opens the per-device storage utilisation report in their MDM console.

What the extra $100 buys, on the company's numbers, is a 2nm A20 Pro that MacRumors says delivers up to 40 percent faster sustained performance, helped by a vapor chamber three times larger than before [4]. The claim a fleet can audit for itself is battery: up to 24 hours of typical use on the Pro, which matches last year's Pro Max, and up to 30 hours on the new Pro Max, in what Apple calls its "biggest generational battery life leap ever" [8]. Check that against your mid-shift charging tickets.

The camera is where a workflow can justify the Pro premium. The 48-megapixel main sensor gets a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4.0, and new Pro Controls add manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance [5]. Field teams shooting for claims files and inspection reports will use manual aperture and shutter, while most office fleets will leave both on auto.

On recurring cost, AppleCare One Family covers every eligible device across up to six Family Sharing members in the U.S. for $49.99 per month, or $599.88 a year [10][13].

Two axes decide this, and both are answerable from records you already hold: whether the work needs manual camera control or the faster chip, and whether any cohort of your fleet has ever filled the tier you bought for it. Two noes send the order down the lineup at base storage. A yes on the first alone puts you on the Pro at 256GB, the one Pro configuration that took the smallest increase this year [16].

What to watch

  • Whether business and carrier channels absorb the $100 with promotions or pass the new list prices straight into renewal quotes.
  • Whether the discontinued iPhone 17 Pro reappears in Apple's refurbished and business channels at last year's price.
  • Duo pre-orders on October 16, and which storage tier Apple ships in volume between $1,999 and $3,199.
