LG CNS and KDDI begin scoping AI projects in five Asia-Pacific markets

LG CNS and KDDI signed an MOU pairing two LG AI platforms with KDDI's 19 Asia-Pacific sites in 15 countries. The companies did not disclose a budget or revenue target, so what exists is an agreement to look for projects.

LG CNS pairs its AI with KDDI's regional network KDDI's Asia-Pacific business locations and countries, and the countries the joint working group designated as priority target markets.

Three figures: KDDI operates 19 business locations across 15 Asia-Pacific countries, and the LG CNS and KDDI working group designated five countries as priority target markets.

What happened

  • The platforms are LG CNS's AgenticWorks, for AI agent services tailored to local businesses, and PhysicalWorks, for robot management at manufacturers, logistics companies and retailers.
  • A joint working group has begun identifying projects in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and China.
  • In Southeast Asia the partners plan smart city solutions that tie urban management and intelligent transport systems to KDDI's telecom infrastructure.
  • Seoul Economic Daily describes KDDI as one of Japan's three largest full-service telecom operators.

Why it matters

  • What's now possible capability LG CNS can approach customers in 15 countries through one counterparty, though at about 1.3 KDDI locations a country the contact in any one market is thin.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction The Korea Herald says the companies will 'explore developing' agent services under an MOU; Seoul Economic Daily says they 'will develop' them under a 'business agreement'. The Herald's wording describes the earlier stage.
  • What it limits constraint The smart city plan is scoped to Southeast Asia, which covers four of the five named markets, so any China project would have to come from the agent, robot or systems-integration lines.

Both executives spoke of what they aim and expect to do. "The partnership aims to create a new industrial foundation by integrating AI, telecommunications and data," said Kentaro Matsuura, deputy head of KDDI's Business Growth Division [8]. "We expect to create new business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific market by combining our capabilities," said Park Sang-kyun, executive vice president and head of LG CNS's telecommunications, retail and services business [9].

An early MOU is best judged by what each side is spared from doing. In our view LG CNS is spared staffing sales and delivery in five countries before anyone has shown a customer exists (or rather, before it knows which of the five is worth staffing), and KDDI, which already sells enterprise AI, cloud and network solutions [7], is spared writing agent and robot-management software [3]. That is an inference from the deal's structure, not a reported figure.

The other reading is that the arrangement is cheap for both because it is mostly names. A working group that is still identifying projects [4] has produced, so far, a list of markets, and a list costs little to write and little to abandon. We lean toward the first reading, with low confidence: a product-for-channel trade is the structure the sources describe, and the structure is all they describe.

What would prove us wrong is easy to name. A priced contract with a named customer in any of the five markets would show the working group has moved from a list to a pipeline. A joint venture or a dedicated local team would show one side is putting capital behind it after all. Without either, the working group's output remains the five countries it started with.

What to watch

  • A named customer and a price on any project in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia or China.
  • Whether later wording from either company moves from 'explore' to a definitive agreement, a joint venture or a dedicated local team.
  • Whether the working group's market list changes, in particular whether a China project emerges outside the Southeast Asia smart city plan.
