Meta discounts its Indian app add-ons four times harder than its AI bundles

Meta One's Indian ladder runs from Rs 79 a month for WhatsApp extras to Rs 20,990 for the top business tier. The compute-heavy AI bundles in the middle are the rungs priced closest to their US equivalents, and basic Meta AI stays free.

What happened

  • Meta unveiled Meta One with more than 50 features across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI, and said benefits will extend to other apps including Edits and its AI smart glasses.
  • Indian pricing starts at Rs 79 a month for WhatsApp Plus and climbs through Core at Rs 549 and Premium at Rs 1,950 to creator and business bundles from Rs 639, Expert at Rs 6,399 and Max at Rs 20,990.
  • The same line-up runs from $2.99 to $499 a month in dollars, with Core at $7.99, Premium at $19.99, Essential from $14.99, Advanced from $49.99, Expert from $149 and Max from $499.
  • Meta reported more than 15 million sign-ups on its paid plans to date, a count that includes free trials alongside paid subscriptions.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost An Indian business that takes the Max tier commits Rs 251,880 a year, and the top perk Quartz cites is an option to request phone support from a Meta representative.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Whether Meta has shown any demand for the AI bundles turns on which reading of the 15 million is right: the Indian Express ties the figure to single product plans, Quartz to paid plans overall.
  • What it limits constraint Meta now sets, and can move, the boundary of how much image and video generation a free account gets, because the extra generation sits inside Core and Premium.
  • Who has to decide decision Business owners paying third parties for scheduling, analytics and shared team access have to price those tools against Meta's own tiers, which bundle 30-day story scheduling, exportable analytics and password-free team access.

Divide each Indian price by its American one and the single ladder separates into three groups. WhatsApp Plus at Rs 79 against $2.99 works out to about 26 rupees per dollar of the US price [28], and Instagram Plus at Rs 99 against $3.99 to about 25 [29]. The creator and business rungs sit near 43 the whole way up: Rs 639 against $14.99, Rs 6,399 against $149, Rs 20,990 against $499 [30]. The two individual bundles are the outliers, at roughly 69 for Core and 98 for Premium [31]. Neither publisher gives an exchange rate, so the ratios compare the tiers with each other and with nothing else.

The group carrying the highest ratio is the one Meta describes as expensive to run. Core and Premium "combine the features from our single product plans with more usage of some of our most compute-intensive AI capabilities," the company said in its announcement [21]. Image and video generation bills Meta in dollars wherever the subscriber lives. Exclusive themes, custom app icons, special effect stickers and extra pinned chats do not [16]. Set against that split, the roughly fourfold spread between the cheapest and dearest ratios [32] looks like heavy localisation on cosmetics and something near a single global price on inference.

The step inside India is steeper too. Premium at Rs 1,950 is 3.55 times Core at Rs 549, where $19.99 is 2.5 times $7.99 [34]. What the extra rupees buy is headroom: according to the Indian Express, Premium is similar to Core with more room to create content using Meta AI and across Meta's family of apps [22].

Meta puts the paid line at usage. "The core experience across our apps and Meta AI has always been free, and that's not changing," the announcement said [2], and subscriptions "unlock more specialised capabilities and expanded AI usage that go beyond what a free experience built for billions can offer," the company said in a press note [1]. Google added extra usage limits of its AI services to Google One earlier this year [27].

On the demand side the only public number mixes trials with payers. Fifteen million sign-ups at the cheapest $2.99 tier, held for twelve months, grosses about $538m [23]. Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Google are together projected to spend about $724bn on capital projects this year [26], which puts that gross at 0.074% of the four-company total [24]. The comparison is loose in Meta's favour and against it at once, since it is one company's subscription revenue at the lowest price in the book against four companies' capex.

Two readings fit these prices equally well. The first is cost: Meta is passing dollar-denominated inference through at close to par and discounting only the features that cost it nothing per use. The second is willingness to pay: Rs 1,950 is what Meta thinks an Indian professional will bear, and the ratio is the coincidence of two unrelated local decisions. Meta said that in initial tests a majority of bundle subscribers used both the AI capabilities and the expression-focused features [20], though the test markets Quartz lists are Singapore, Guatemala, Bolivia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand and Bangladesh [25]. What would separate the two readings is the next Indian price change: if the bundle ratio falls toward 43 as volume grows, willingness to pay was binding all along; if it holds near 98, inference cost was.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta ever breaks out Core and Premium bundle subscribers separately from single product plans and free trials.
  • Whether the amount of free Meta AI image and video generation is capped more tightly as the paid bundles scale.
  • Whether agencies take the Rs 20,990 Max tier, and whether Meta discloses any business-tier subscriber count.
