Meta pitches its Muse AI agent to the 200 million small business owners on its platforms

Meta launched Muse for Small Business on Tuesday, pitching the AI agent at the 200 million small business owners it says use its platforms. How much cash it brings in depends on how many owners pay for higher limits and how much ad spend comes from the campaigns it drafts.

What happened

  • The launch came a day after Meta formed Meta Enterprise Platform, a division led by former MongoDB CEO CJ Desai that combines all of its AI work, Muse included.
  • Jefferies estimates Muse could reach $10.8 billion in annualized subscription revenue if it hits 1 billion users by end-2027 and 3% pay an average $30 a month.
  • Meta shares rose 26% in September as investors warmed to its AI strategy, CNBC reported.

Why it matters

  • What's now possible capability Because Muse drafts ad campaigns and connects to Meta ad accounts, Meta can earn from the agent through ad spend the owner approves, with no subscription involved.
  • What it limits constraint Muse must get the owner's approval before it publishes, sends, spends or shares, so the back-office time it saves depends on how many sign-offs an owner will make each day.
  • Who's exposed exposure Intuit, Zoom and Salesforce's Slack become data sources for an agent Meta controls, so owners do more of their daily work in Meta's interface while their records stay in the vendors' software.

Every revenue estimate attached to Muse depends on where Meta draws the free line. The company says Muse is free for most of the services people and small businesses need from it, and it sells subscriptions for extra capabilities and higher weekly usage limits [7]. The small business version keeps the consumer model: a free tier with usage limits, and paid plans above it [5].

Jefferies, in a client note cited by CNBC, sketched the paid case. It assumes 1 billion Muse users by the end of 2027, 3% of them paying, at an average of $30 a month, for $10.8 billion in annualized subscription revenue [14]. The sum holds. Thirty million subscribers at $360 a year is $10.8 billion [21]. Dina Powell McCormick, Meta's president, told Jim Cramer, "We have 200 million small business owners on our platform at Meta" [6]. Apply the same 3% and $30 to that base and the result is about $2.2 billion a year [20]. Jefferies counts business customers as upside on top of its scenario [15]. Neither report includes the price of the paid tiers.

Subscriptions are one route to the money. Advertising is another, and I think it is the larger one. One of the tasks Meta described has Muse take an owner's existing ad content and best-performing posts and draft a week of posts and a new ad campaign for review [9]. It also plugs straight into Meta ad accounts [2]. Muse checks with the owner before anything is published, sent, spent or shared [16], so a drafted campaign is one approval away from spend on Meta's own platforms. The third possibility is that owners stay inside the free limits and Muse becomes a cost Meta absorbs. If paid conversion among businesses gets close to the 3% Jefferies uses, subscriptions are the bigger prize and I have the advertising case wrong.

The approval step also cuts into the time-saving pitch. Powell McCormick said, "It's basically allowing small business owners to take the most precious thing they have, their time, and to use it on building their business for the future, not worrying about the back-office work." [11] An owner who signs off on every payment and every post is still doing part of that work.

Meta lists customer messaging, cash flow, inventory and websites among the tasks [1]. For now, the software companies named at launch are integrations. Muse connects to Intuit's QuickBooks, Zoom and Salesforce's Slack alongside Facebook, Instagram and Meta ad accounts [2], and it accepts custom connectors for services Meta does not yet support [3]. CNBC describes this as Meta bringing Muse into tools owners already use instead of asking them to adopt a new ecosystem [13]. Meta is putting its agent on top of software those vendors still sell. CNBC also expects intense competition as AI and software companies race to put agents into the workplace [12].

Desai's division will make the business easier to count later, because it pulls all of Meta's AI work, consumer and business Muse included, under one executive [4]. Meta shares rose 26% in September [10], and the stock trades at 14.6 times 2029 earnings-per-share estimates, according to FactSet data cited by CNBC [17]. Cramer said "enterprise companies get high multiples" [18]. His charitable trust owns both Meta and Salesforce shares [19]. The consumer Muse launched earlier this month [8], so the 26% rise in the share price came on a product only a few weeks old.

What to watch

  • Prices for Muse's paid tiers and the size of the free tier's weekly usage limits.
  • Whether Meta reports Meta Enterprise Platform as its own line in results, so Desai's revenue can be valued separately.
  • Muse's user count against the 1 billion users by the end of 2027 that the Jefferies scenario assumes.
