Meta builds a camera keychain for Muse, its chart-topping AI agent
Meta says the Muse Charm, with a 2-inch screen, two cameras and 5G, ships in December, after the Muse app reached #1 on Apple's free chart. Meta is betting people will carry a second device for an agent whose demand so far shows up only as app installs.

What happened
- Zuckerberg said Muse will also come to Meta's smart glasses, so the same agent will run in the phone app, on glasses and on the Charm.
- Muse's connected services include Gmail and Google Drive, Shopify, OpenTable, Ticketmaster and PayPal, according to Tom's Guide.
- CNET cites reports that the Muse app has been downloaded more than half a million times.
- CNET reports that a serious zero-day vulnerability in Muse surfaced this week and has since been patched.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure A keychain that can see and send over its own 5G link brings back the bystander worries that followed Meta's camera glasses, and CNET reports Meta has given few details on how it protects wearers and bystanders.
- Who has to decide decision Services already connected to Muse now have to decide whether their flows can finish by voice on a 2-inch screen or send Charm users back to their phones.
- What it sets up precedent December sales will test whether an agent wired into Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp messaging can sell as a gadget where, in Tom's Guide's telling, the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 failed.

Zuckerberg says Meta will take a commission on Muse purchases as app tops 2.5 million US downloads in two weeksConfirmed3 publishers
Someone in a shop picks up a product and wants to know what it is. With Muse today, that means getting the phone out and opening the app. The Muse Charm skips that step and connects to the assistant directly [3]. Tom's Guide puts it at roughly the size of an AirPods case [4]. The user taps its 2-inch OLED screen to trigger a fingerprint sensor, then talks to an animated avatar [5].
Here's what users have actually done: they installed the app, in numbers that put it ahead of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude on the free chart [1]. Here's what hardware teams tell themselves users do: turn an install into a daily habit, and the habit into a reason to carry a second object. The reports include no retention or daily-use figures, and Meta has not announced the Charm's price, battery life or full hardware specifications [12].
The calendar leaves little room to find out. Muse launched in early September, according to CNET, and Zuckerberg said the Charm will be ready by December [16][11]. That is about three months from app to hardware [21], so the Charm goes on sale with roughly one quarter of Muse usage behind it.
The pitch is large. "It is actually quite clear personal superintelligence will not only come first; it will be much bigger and more important," Zuckerberg said at Meta Connect in Menlo Park [2][13]. "So we have shifted our focus to building the best devices for personal superintelligence," he said [13]. What Meta showed is smaller: a keychain with speakers, microphones, front and rear cameras and built-in 5G [6].
Only some of the demo tasks need that hardware. Tom's Guide lists sending emails and turning saved Instagram recipes into grocery lists [8]. Neither needs a camera. The camera tasks belong to the Charm: pointing it at a product or a sign and having the agent identify or read it in real time [7].
The test I'd apply sorts each task on two axes: whether it needs the camera, and whether it comes up when the phone is in a bag or the hands are full. Camera needed, phone out of reach, is the Charm's case, such as reading a platform sign while carrying luggage. Camera needed, phone at hand, goes to the phone. No camera, phone at hand, is the free app [1]. No camera, phone out of reach, is a request Meta's glasses may also handle once Muse reaches them [14]. For a team deciding whether to buy devices or build a Charm-specific flow, I'd wait for the price and the first reviews unless most of its list sits in the first box. The cost of waiting is skipping the holiday window Meta aimed the launch at [11].
What to watch
- Whether the Charm's built-in 5G is sold with its own carrier plan or folded into the device price.
- How Muse works once it reaches Meta's smart glasses, which will show whether glasses owners have any reason to carry the Charm as well.
