Microsoft's October release of 1,407 CVEs tops 2020's full-year record by 146

Microsoft shipped a record 1,407 CVEs on October Patch Tuesday, including an exploited Windows Shell Mark of the Web bypass. The component's 2026 record argues for a standing slot in the monthly patch cycle.

Correction, : An earlier version compared October's 1,407 CVEs with 2020's 1,261 as if that were the previous Patch Tuesday record. 1,261 was 2020's full-year total; the previous single-release record was September 2026's.

What happened

  • Tenable counted 26 Windows Shell CVEs patched in 2026 through October, against three in 2025 and one each in 2024 and 2022.
  • A second zero day, in SharePoint, lets unauthenticated attackers exploit token validation flaws to hijack targeted user accounts.
  • The third zero day is an untrusted search path in the .NET framework that lets an unauthenticated attacker bypass Windows Defender Application Control.
  • Atlassian self-hosted products face exploitation attempts reported from October 6, though attempts do not establish that any customer was compromised.

Why it matters

  • Who has to decide decision The Shell bypass, the GitLab flaw and the Atlassian flaw are marked for immediate action, so teams have to split a fast lane from the normal test cycle this month.
  • Who's exposed exposure Customers running their own GitLab or Atlassian servers carry risk that the vendors' hosted versions no longer have, since both clouds are already fixed.
  • What it sets up precedent Three exploited Shell flaws in one year, one of them a repair of an earlier incomplete patch, supports a monthly Shell line in the patch plan before the next release.

The record count sets the size of the queue and says little about its order. Tenable and CSO Online count 1,407 CVEs [8][1], and CrowdStrike and CyberScoop count 1,413 [20][21]. That single release tops 2020's full-year record of 1,261 CVEs [4][5] by 146 [14], or about 11.6 percent [15]. The list was long enough that the release arrived several hours after the usual 1 p.m. Eastern drop time, according to CSO Online [23]. The total as reported does not include a breakdown by severity.

The previous single-release record was September's [8]. Tenable wrote that October is "the second consecutive month to reset the bar as the largest Patch Tuesday release" [8]. Pureinfotech counts September at 974 vulnerabilities [9], and Krebs on Security put it at "nearly 1,000" [10].

The Windows Shell figures say more about where to start. Narang called 26 patched Shell flaws in 2026 "a staggering figure compared to previous years" [11]. Against three in 2025, that is about 8.7 times as many [16]. Three Shell flaws have been exploited in the wild this year [3]. One of them, CVE-2026-32202, was a fix for an incomplete patch of CVE-2026-21510 [3], the bug linked to APT28 [3].

A CVE count tracks how hard researchers looked as much as how much is broken, so the 26 on its own proves little about attack surface. The exploitation record is a different matter. Attackers have used three Shell flaws this year [3], and the October one bypasses Mark of the Web protections [2].

After the Shell bypass, the order is a judgement call. The SharePoint hole, CVE-2026-102866, is one CSOs need to act on, according to Dustin Childs, head of threat awareness at TrendAI's Zero Day Initiative [7]. Nightwing flagged four on-premises Exchange updates, each fixing one flaw rated CVSS 8.8 [12]. "Exchange admins should prioritize testing and deployment of these patches, given the historical track record of Exchange vulnerabilities being actively targeted in the wild," said Nicholas Carroll, Nightwing's cyber incident response manager [13]. Nightwing also noted that Microsoft has introduced new risk cohort classifications for prioritizing vulnerabilities [6].

Self-hosted products carry a separate exposure. GitLab has fixed its hosted instance, which leaves self-managed servers to patch [26]. "CVE-2026-97229 puts a critical part of the software supply chain at risk," said Gene Moody, Field CTO at Action1 [27]. Atlassian Cloud is patched [25], while CVE-2026-21589 affects eight self-hosted products [24]. Nightwing advised log review and secret rotation where exposure is suspected [25]. IBM rates its IBM i flaw, CVE-2026-96119, at CVSS 9.9 [28].

October's queue is the exploited Shell bypass, then SharePoint, Exchange and the self-hosted products. The standing item is Shell, and we'd expect it to appear in the November release. The year's 26 Shell fixes through October average about 2.6 a month [17].

What to watch

  • Whether November's Patch Tuesday adds more Windows Shell CVEs to the 26 Tenable counted through October.
  • Whether anyone reports in-the-wild exploitation of the SharePoint or .NET zero days, which are listed as unexploited.
  • Whether Atlassian or Nightwing move from reported exploitation attempts to confirmed customer compromises.
