Morgan Stanley pushes tokenized stocks on its ATS to Q1 2027 over limited product supply
Morgan Stanley moved tokenized-equity support on its alternative trading system from the second half of 2026 to Q1 2027. Its digital asset head cites limited products and demand, crypto.news reported, as DTCC still plans an October 2026 service.

Timeline: in March 2026 Oldenburg publicly announced a second-half 2026 plan; separately, DTCC plans an October 2026 launch of a tokenization service; Morgan Stanley's revised target, moved from second-half 2026, is the first quarter of 2027.
| Date | Event | Claim |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | Oldenburg publicly announces second-half 2026 plan | 10 |
| October 2026 | Separately, DTCC plans to launch a tokenization service | 5 |
| Q1 2027 | Revised Morgan Stanley target, moved from second-half 2026 | 1 |
What happened
- Oldenburg gave the new target at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, calling Q1 2027 more realistic than the timetable she outlined in March.
- The venue is Trajectory Cross, which already handles traditional equities, ETFs and ADRs, and the bank plans to add tokenized securities alongside them.
- In a May 4 announcement, DTCC said more than 50 companies sit in an industry working group supporting tokenized securities infrastructure.
- DTCC has already completed production transactions involving traditional securities ahead of its planned tokenization service.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction The sources split on the cause, and the cause decides who has to act: securities issuers if the shortage is product, custodians and settlement operators if it is infrastructure.
- What it costs cost Morgan Stanley keeps building wallet infrastructure and testing applications in its Digital Asset Lab for a venue with no tokenized stock to list yet, so each month of delay adds build cost with no trading volume against it.
- What it sets up precedent Cryptobriefing warns that tying the new date to ecosystem progress leaves room for a second revision if custody and settlement infrastructure matures slowly.

How far the date slipped depends on which days are counted. The second half of 2026 runs July 1 to December 31 and the first quarter of 2027 runs January 1 to March 31, so the old window ends the day before the new one opens, and the gap between the two targets is anywhere from one day to nine months [18]. Cryptobriefing called it roughly a quarter [16]. The bank has not confirmed a launch date or a list of eligible stocks, and Oldenburg did not disclose added project costs [13][14].
The two accounts of the cause differ. According to crypto.news, Oldenburg said limited product availability and institutional demand are holding up preparations [2]. She said, "We need product in order to be able to support them within the ATS." [3] Cryptobriefing reports her describing the new date as alignment with maturing custody and settlement infrastructure [20].
DTCC sits next to this. Oldenburg named its coming service among the developments the bank is monitoring [9], and the service would let eligible securities held at the Depository Trust Company be represented through blockchain-based records [8]. October 2026 falls inside the half-year the bank first targeted, and Q1 2027 opens at least two months after October ends [19]. Neither source says the bank is waiting on DTCC, so that link is our inference. We think the DTCC service is the likeliest source of the tokenized securities the bank says it lacks.
The sources show one date moving, the bank's. DTCC's October date is still the plan [5], so the claim that tokenized-stock timelines are slipping rests on one bank.
We would drop the product-shortage reading if DTCC's October date slips, since that would put the delay in infrastructure, the explanation Cryptobriefing reports. A Q1 launch with a long list of eligible stocks would point the other way: the product arrived and the extra quarter was cushion.
Oldenburg's 2030 forecast is wide. She predicted tokenized real-world assets of between $3 trillion and $10 trillion [11], a top end 3.3 times the bottom [17], and the second-half 2026 target she announced publicly in March 2026 has already been revised within the same year [10].
What to watch
- Whether Morgan Stanley names eligible stocks or a confirmed launch date for tokenized equities on Trajectory Cross before Q1 2027.
- Whether DTCC keeps its October 2026 tokenization service date; a slip would move the explanation from product supply to infrastructure.
- Whether the bank's stated reason for any further delay stays product and demand or shifts to custody and settlement readiness.

- [19]
Q1 2027 opens at least two months after the end of October 2026, the month of DTCC's planned service launch.
- [20]
Cryptobriefing reports that Oldenburg said the updated schedule better reflects how the broader financial ecosystem is progressing, and framed the shift as alignment with maturing custody and settlement infrastructure.
- [21]
Cryptobriefing wrote that the obvious risk is that one delay becomes two: the bank tied its new date to ecosystem progress, and if custody and settlement infrastructure matures more slowly than expected, the logic behind this revision could justify another one.
