Musk supplied 58% of the Senate Leadership Fund's record $272.9 million quarter

Elon Musk gave the Senate Leadership Fund $158 million in September through a Texas PAC created to support Ken Paxton, CNBC reported. Crypto Briefing said a Kalshi market had Democrat James Talarico at 62.5% to win, relatively stable over the past week.

Key figures: the Senate Leadership Fund's third quarter without Musk's gift was $114.9 million, below the nearly $116 million it raised in the third quarter of 2024. Musk gave the fund $158 million in September.

What happened

  • The fund's $272.9 million third quarter was the largest in its history and included $209.7 million from donors, and it entered the final weeks with more than $155 million in cash.
  • CNBC reported that Musk's two contributions, of $75 million and $83 million, are among the largest political donations ever.
  • CNBC wrote that Talarico has turned what had been expected to be a safe Republican Senate contest into one of the most expensive races in the country.
  • Talarico announced he raised $64 million in the quarter, a record third quarter for a Senate candidate, while Paxton raised $10.2 million, according to an FEC filing.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction Crypto Briefing has the money running from the fund to the Texas PAC, CNBC has it entering the fund through that PAC, and the two routes imply different amounts reaching Texas.
  • What it limits constraint Texas draws on a pool that also had to cover North Carolina, where the fund stopped adding ads after more than $30 million, and Kansas, where it redirected money.
  • Who's exposed exposure Take Musk out and the fund's quarter is $114.9 million, under the nearly $116 million it raised in the third quarter of 2024, so the record depends on a single donor.

The money predates the news. Musk made his gifts in September [2], the same month Republican groups spent roughly $122 million in Texas [7], and the filing that disclosed them landed on Thursday [13]. Crypto Briefing, relaying a Kalshi post, put the Republican side of the Texas market at 37.5% [4] and then wrote that the pricing suggests growing support for a Republican win [21], an odd reading of numbers it also calls relatively stable [4].

Set against the rest of the field, the gift is large. It is about 58% of the fund's $272.9 million quarter [17] and about 15 times what Paxton raised himself in the same period [14]. It also topped the Democratic Senate Majority PAC's record $151 million third quarter by $7 million [19], although that group's FEC filings are not yet available [10].

The headline figure is $158 million. The Texas figure, or rather the part of it that went to Texas advertising, is not in the sources. The AdImpact numbers cover Republican groups in Texas in general, not the fund alone [7].

With 18 days to go [6], we think the Texas price is right to treat the filing as old news. The counter-thesis has some force. The UT/Texas Politics Project poll has Talarico ahead only within the margin of error [5], so 62.5% looks generous to him. Republican reservations of $66 million as of early October [7] are 54% of September's $122 million [16], and a reservation figure from that date can grow before Election Day. Against that, Talarico's own quarter was about six times Paxton's [15], so he can also pay for late advertising.

We would be wrong if the Talarico price moves several points in the days after the filing with no new poll behind it, since that would mean traders had not priced the September money. A revision of Republican Texas reservations well above $66 million would point the same way.

What to watch

  • AdImpact's updated Republican reservations in Texas: a total well above the $66 million booked as of early October would undercut the view that the money is already priced.
  • The Kalshi price for a Talarico win in the days after Thursday's filing, against the 62.5% quoted, and whether a new poll accompanies any move.
  • The Senate Majority PAC's own FEC filing, which would confirm the $151 million third quarter the group reported.
