Neonomics raises EUR 3.6 million entirely from existing backers after cutting costs by almost half

Neonomics' existing shareholders put EUR 3.6 million into the Norwegian open banking firm after it cut operating costs by almost 50%. No outside investor joined, so the holders backing the restructured company are the ones who owned it before.

What happened

  • According to thepaypers, the cost reduction was achieved while Neonomics kept its existing customer base.
  • Since the start of 2026 Neonomics says it has strengthened its team, sharpened its commercial focus and grown new customer acquisition by more than 60%.
  • The company sees the most potential in consumer-facing financial services, personal finance, accounting and ERP, plus other businesses building around financial data.
  • Founded in 2017, Neonomics is licensed by the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority and passported across the EU.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure The EUR 3.6 million sits with holders who already own Neonomics, so no outside investor shares the downside if the restructured business stalls.
  • What it limits constraint A 60% rise in new customer acquisition comes without a customer count, so it cannot be tested against a cost cut of almost half.
  • Who has to decide decision Management is putting growth money behind data enrichment, a bet that customers will pay for interpreted data while basic access turns common.

A cost base that fell by almost 50% [2] changes what a fixed sum buys. At a cut of exactly half, EUR 3.6 million [1] covers twice the months of spending it would have covered at the old level (1 / (1 - 0.5) = 2) [12]. With the cut just short of half, the multiple is just short of two, and it assumes revenue held and ignores what the restructuring itself cost. It is a ceiling. In our view it is also the case for an insider round of this size: the holders are funding a company that spends a little over half what it did [14].

The 60% growth in new customer acquisition [15] is harder to use. A percentage on a small base is still a small number of customers. The company did not disclose a valuation, the customer count behind the 60%, or how the EUR 3.6 million splits between payments and data. fintech.global put the round at $4m [5]. That implies 1.11 dollars to the euro (4 / 3.6) [13], so the two outlets are describing one round in two currencies.

Both outlets treat the insider money as a signal. thepaypers says it indicates continued investor backing after the restructuring [17], and fintech.global says the capital came entirely from existing backers, which it calls a sign of continued investor commitment [16]. Neonomics CEO Alfonso Muñoz said, "The combination of a significantly improved cost structure, growing customer demand and continued shareholder support puts us in a strong position to execute on our strategy." [11]

We think the signal is real but narrow. The round followed the cost cut [2], so the cost base the holders are funding already exists. The counter-reading is as available: holders protecting an existing stake may put money in when no outsider will, and an insider cheque cannot say what an outsider would pay. We would be wrong if the next financing again draws no new investor.

The stated use of the money is further growth and scaling [6]. Neonomics says that as access to financial data becomes more widespread, the opportunity is in helping businesses structure, enrich and interpret it [7]. thepaypers places that move inside a wider change in open banking, where basic data access is becoming more available and providers add services on top [8]. If access is turning common, the margin has to come from what is built on it. Muñoz said, "Providing access to financial data is only the starting point. The real value lies in turning that data into intelligence that improves financial products, workflows and decisions." [9]

What to watch

  • A named outside investor, or a priced round, in Neonomics' next financing.
  • A customer count or revenue figure that puts the 60% rise in new customer acquisition on a base.
  • Whether Neonomics reports revenue from enrichment products separately from payments.
