Salesforce's $3.9bn agent line grew 210%, inside a company growing 11%

Agentforce and Data 360 annual recurring revenue is real and it recurs. Almost everything else in the quarter landed within a rounding error of consensus, or came from paper marks.

What happened

  • Second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $11.35 billion grew 11 percent and edged past the $11.33 billion analysts expected.
  • Current remaining performance obligations were $33.5 billion, and full-year revenue guidance was raised to $46.1 billion to $46.4 billion.
  • The stock rose 11 percent after hours and is 33 percent off its late-July low, yet still down 23 percent for the year.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction A line compounding above 210 percent sitting inside a company growing 11 percent means much of the run-rate is spend being reclassified rather than won. Read the ARR as mix before reading it as lift.
  • Who's exposed exposure Reported earnings now travel with private-market valuations. The same portfolio that turned a $3.37 quarter into $5.90 subtracts on the way back down, with nothing changing in operations.
  • What it sets up precedent A disclosed dollar figure for agentic revenue sets the bar for peers selling agents on customer anecdotes. They now have to publish a comparable number or explain the absence.
  • What it limits constraint Because agents and the data platform are reported as one metric, no outsider can size the agent business on its own or judge how much of it is a data attach.

Run the ARR line backwards and the base is small. Growth of more than 210 percent puts last year's Agentforce and Data 360 figure at no more than roughly $1.26 billion, which means about $2.6 billion was added in twelve months [8][14]. Now the top line: $11.35 billion at 11 percent growth implies a year-ago quarter near $10.23 billion, an increase of about $1.12 billion, or roughly $4.5 billion annualised [1][15]. The AI and data run-rate therefore grew by an amount equal to close to three-fifths of the company's annualised revenue increase [16]. ARR is a run-rate snapshot and revenue is recognised over time, so the two never reconcile cleanly, but that gap is too wide to be timing alone. A material part of the $3.9 billion is money Salesforce was already collecting under a different product name.

The rest of the print is a study in narrow margins. Revenue beat by $20 million on $11.33 billion of consensus [1]. Current remaining performance obligations came in at $33.5 billion against $33.4 billion expected, a beat of about 0.3 percent [10][20]. The third-quarter guide midpoint of $11.46 billion sits 0.4 percent above the FactSet number [12][19], and the raised full-year midpoint of $46.25 billion is 0.3 percent above the $46.112 billion analysts carried [6][13]. The second-half reacceleration case rests largely on CFO and COO Robin Washington's statement that net new annual order value posted its strongest growth in four years, a claim the company did not attach a figure to [11].

The earnings line is where the marketing and the accounting part company. Adjusted EPS of $5.90 against a $3.27 consensus reads as an enormous beat, but $2.53 of it was a paper gain on strategic investments, which is about 96 percent of the surprise [3][4][17]. The operating number, $3.37, cleared consensus by ten cents [21]. The report attributes the gain to the strategic portfolio generally rather than to any single holding [3]; that portfolio includes Anthropic, Databricks and Stripe [5], and Salesforce announced a partnership with Anthropic the same day that puts Claude inside its platform [22].

What survives all of that is the scale of the ARR itself. Just under $3.9 billion is about 8.4 percent of the midpoint of the raised full-year revenue guide [18], which is past the point where a number can be dismissed as pilot spend or a Benioff talking point, even though he used it as one, telling investors ARR is "about to cross $4 billion" [7]. The market paid for it: an 11 percent move in the extended session, on top of a 33 percent recovery from the late-July low that still leaves the stock down 23 percent for the year [2][9]. Agentic AI has cleared the recurring-revenue test at one large vendor. It has not yet cleared the harder one, which is showing up in the consolidated growth rate.

What to watch

  • Whether the Q3 result inside the raised $46.1bn-$46.4bn range shows reported growth above 11 percent, which is what reacceleration would actually look like.
  • Any reversal in the strategic-investment marks, which would cut EPS the same way it inflated it this quarter.
  • Whether Claudeforce shows up as incremental ARR in the next two prints or simply re-labels consumption Salesforce already had.
