Scaleway to build AI supercomputer in Sweden on AMD chips, its first outside France
Scaleway, the French cloud company, will build a supercomputer on AMD MI355X chips in Sweden, its first site outside France. European AI teams gain a commercial alternative to Nvidia hardware, and AMD gains a reference customer whose order size is unknown.

What happened
- Scaleway also announced a cluster of several thousand Nvidia B300 GPUs for Copenhagen the same day, so its Danish site will run on Nvidia while the Swedish one runs on AMD.
- With an existing Paris facility, the three GPU installations are meant to reach tens of thousands of GPUs and tens of exaflops eventually, according to Scaleway.
- Bull will assemble and maintain the machine, with servers from Giga Computing, networking from HPE, storage from VAST Data and liquid cooling from Motul.
- Scaleway chose Sweden for its largely low-carbon electricity and AI sector, after entering the Swedish market in May through a Tele2 deal to sell cloud and AI services.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction Qz reports Scaleway aiming for one of the first commercial AMD supercomputers in Europe, Channel NewsAsia has it as the first, and LUMI, Oracle and Vultr already put AMD chips in European hands.
- Who has to decide decision A European AI team can now test a workload on AMD silicon at a commercial operator, and the deciding question is whether its code runs on the open ROCm tools or depends on Nvidia's proprietary CUDA.
- What it limits constraint A buyer who wants one software stack across Scaleway's new sites needs code that runs on both AMD's ROCm and Nvidia's CUDA, because Scaleway is not standardising on either chip.

We think the build is solid evidence that European buyers will have a second chip to price against. The MI355X is AMD's answer to Nvidia's Blackwell line [3]. It is thin evidence of AMD demand, or rather evidence that cannot yet be sized. Scaleway did not disclose how many MI355X chips Sweden will hold, what the machine costs or when it goes live. Copenhagen is going to Nvidia [4], so the Swedish share of the three-site target [15] cannot be computed from what has been published.
The counter-thesis has some force: an operator does not give its first site outside France to a token order [1]. That is inference from an announcement. We would be wrong if Scaleway publishes a Swedish chip count above Copenhagen's several thousand [4], or names anchor customers before the build is finished.
AMD's own statement is about choice. Stephanie Dismore, AMD's senior vice president for EMEA, said: "Scaleway is expanding the choice of AI infrastructure available to customers across Europe, through AMD Instinct GPUs and our open ROCm software ecosystem." [5] The one dollar figure in the record for AMD's European spending is the UK plan announced in June, up to $2.7 billion over five years [10], or at most $540 million a year [12].
The endorsements come from parties with a stake, and neither is about AMD's chips. Stefan Trampus, Tele2's head of business-to-business, said the supercomputer "sends a clear signal" on Sweden's attractiveness for AI infrastructure [9], and his company is Scaleway's sales partner in Sweden [7]. Bull, the builder [2], told Reuters the project would "enhance Europe's AI capabilities" [11].
What to watch
- The Swedish chip count, price and go-live date, set against Copenhagen's several thousand Nvidia B300 GPUs.
- Anchor customers named for the Swedish machine, and whether any run production workloads on ROCm.
- Whether Scaleway's own materials say the first or one of the first, which would settle the difference between the two reports.
