Sony slims its PS5 Pro AI upscaler to run on the base PS5

Sony's new QSSR brings AI upscaling built with AMD to the base PS5, starting with two first-party games, Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. How far it spreads now depends on other studios, and Sony's graphics engineer puts the work at a few days of tuning for a game that already runs PSSR.

What happened

  • Sony had said PSSR needed too much computing power for the base PS5, and built QSSR on a streamlined neural network hand-tuned for the older console.
  • PlayStation engineer Daniel Craig said base PS5 teams must tune intermediate and final presentation targets for each graphics mode, while Pro builds almost always output 4K.
  • After the 2026 price rises, the PS5 Pro costs $900 and the base PS5 without a disc drive costs $600.

Why it matters

  • Who has to decide decision A studio that already ships PSSR on Pro now has little technical excuse for leaving its base PS5 version on older upscaling.
  • What it costs cost For two years the $300 step up to a Pro was the only way to get Sony's AI upscaling, and in games that ship both tiers it now buys output near 4K instead of near 1440p.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Sony's studios report sharper detail and steadier images, while Gizmodo judged the difference hard to spot from across a room, so the benefit to players from the sofa is not yet shown.

A base PS5 owner who installs the latest Ghost of Yotei patch finds one new entry among the graphics options [6]. It is QSSR, a lighter version of the PSSR upscaler that arrived almost two years ago as a headline feature of the PS5 Pro [16]. Sony calls it a "new performance tier of AI upscaling," built through Project Amethyst, its graphics work with AMD [1].

The hardware gap that once led Sony to call this "impossible" is still there [8]. Digital Foundry found QSSR slower than PSSR because the base console has no dedicated machine-learning silicon, and expects results closer to an upscaled 1440p [3]. Sony got around the gap with a smaller network, hand-tuned to the older chip [2].

Sony is pitching Pro-style image quality on the cheaper console. So far it has shipped an optional setting in two games from its own first-party studios [6][9]. "While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5," Daniel Craig, PlayStation's principal engineer of graphics R&D, wrote [10]. Insomniac says Wolverine gets clearer pixels in dense areas such as Madripoor and Shinjuku [12]. Sucker Punch says Ghost of Yotei's image is steadier than the PS5 managed before [13]. Gizmodo watched Sony's comparison videos and thought the difference might be hard to spot from across the room [14].

Studios are the first audience. Craig told Digital Foundry that QSSR is "fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR," and that it needs only a few days of tuning [11]. Sony says it will offer QSSR to all PlayStation developers [7]. The older console needs more of that tuning. "On PS5 Pro, developers almost uniformly output to 4K and adjust render resolution beneath it," Craig said [4]. "On PS5, teams have to be more flexible, tuning not just render resolution, but also their intermediate and final presentation targets depending on the graphics mode," he said [5].

Reach depends on adoption. The coverage includes no install base and no count of players who switch the option on, so for now QSSR reaches the base PS5 owners of two games [6]. Digital Foundry still wrote that "low resolution and poor upscaling have impacted so many titles in this generation, but QSSR could make a big difference" [19].

For buyers, the Pro costs $900 and the base PS5 without a disc drive costs $600 after the 2026 price rises [15]. In a game that ships both tiers, the $300 difference buys the step from roughly 1440p output to 4K [17][18].

For a studio lead, two facts sort the decision. One is whether the title already ships PSSR on Pro. The other is whether its base PS5 version suffers from the low resolution Digital Foundry describes [19]. If both are true, adding QSSR is the clear call: Craig's few days of tuning, plus a pass on the presentation targets for each graphics mode [11][5]. A PSSR title whose base version already looks sharp can add it cheaply, but the gain is one Gizmodo found hard to see from across the room [14]. A title without PSSR is outside Craig's estimate [11]. If its base version is blurry, the studio should get the work scoped with Sony first. If it looks fine, QSSR can wait.

What to watch

  • The first third-party game to ship QSSR, and whether its studio reports the few days of tuning Craig estimated for titles that already support PSSR.
  • Independent resolution and frame-rate measurements of QSSR in Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, to confirm or revise the expected 1440p output.
  • Whether Rockstar adopts QSSR for GTA 6 on base PS5, after Notebookcheck called the game's PS5 Pro performance concerning.
