SpaceX agrees to buy Grain Management's 800 MHz band to push Starlink Mobile through walls
SpaceX agreed on Thursday to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio for Starlink Mobile, pending approval from the FCC. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile shares fell after hours on fears that a satellite rival that can reach phones indoors will start a price war.
The Investor · Invest desk
What happened
- SpaceX is acquiring 100 per cent of the 800 MHz holding from Grain, which Channel NewsAsia describes as a private-equity firm.
- Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, according to Channel NewsAsia.
- Low-band frequencies travel longer distances and get through walls and tree cover, which Channel NewsAsia calls a major technical hurdle for satellite-based mobile networks.
- The FCC this week approved Starlink Mobile's Gen2 constellation application, authorizing SpaceX to launch 15,000 satellites optimized for 2 GHz spectrum.
Why it matters
- Who has to decide decision Until the FCC rules on the transfer, the indoor coverage exists only on contract. The regulator therefore decides when any price pressure on the carriers can start.
- Who's exposed exposure AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are exposed in a market Channel NewsAsia calls saturated, where every subscriber Starlink Mobile signs is one taken from them.
- What it sets up precedent Owners of US low-band licenses can now count SpaceX as a buyer. A satellite operator joins the bidders for any future sale of nationwide spectrum.

SpaceX's own description of the asset is a "license portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band" [2]. Read literally, "up to" is a ceiling on what it holds in any given market. Channel NewsAsia set out how the bands split the work. The global 2 GHz band Starlink Mobile already holds provides high-bandwidth capacity, while the 800 MHz band lets the signal pass through obstacles [6]. Under that split, a phone inside a building depends on the 800 MHz holding [6].
"This prime low-band spectrum addresses one of the key remaining technical gaps that will pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major mobile carrier in the US," SpaceX said [13]. Musk called it a "very big deal" in a post on X [14]. The company's sentence is the more careful of the two. "One of the key remaining technical gaps" concedes that at least one other remains [13].
If the FCC approves [5] and the low band performs as described, Starlink Mobile can price to take customers in what Channel NewsAsia calls an already saturated market [10]. A slow or conditioned approval leaves the threat on paper and gives the carriers time. The third path is approval and a working network whose low-band slice, at up to 14 MHz, carries indoor traffic for a small group of users, so the product stays an add-on to carrier networks [2]. I think the deal settles the coverage argument and leaves the pricing argument open. The counter-thesis is that in a saturated market the incumbents do not need to lose many subscribers before cutting prices becomes the cheaper defence. This view is wrong if Starlink Mobile, once approved, publishes US plans priced below the carriers' and the indoor service holds up.
Investors sold before any of that was settled. One Channel NewsAsia report had T-Mobile US down 2.7 per cent, Verizon down 3 per cent and AT&T down 3.6 per cent in extended trading [12]. Another report from the same outlet had all three down more than 5 per cent [11]. The gap between the two is more than 1.4 points for AT&T and more than 2.3 for T-Mobile [16]. None of the reports include a Starlink Mobile price, so the shares moved on the fear of a price war, which is the reason Channel NewsAsia gave for the fall [10].
Channel NewsAsia describes Musk's aim as bypassing traditional wireless infrastructure and reaching smartphones directly from orbit [15]. On that plan, SpaceX spends its capital on satellites and licenses, with nothing going to towers [15]. The licenses come from Grain, a firm CNBC says specializes in digital infrastructure [8].
What to watch
- The FCC's review of the Grain transfer, including any conditions or timetable it attaches.
- Whether the Gen2 satellites, described as optimized for 2 GHz, can also use the 800 MHz band without new hardware.
- How AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile close in the next regular session, the first regular-hours test of the after-hours selling.
