Strategy puts nearly nine dollars into retiring STRC for every dollar of new bitcoin

Strategy bought 250 bitcoin for $21.5 million to reach 848,250 BTC and spent $192.4 million repurchasing STRC preferred stock. The buyback is 3.5% of the $5.52 billion it held in dollar reserves and cash on October 11.

Strategy's STRC buyback outspent its bitcoin buy Strategy's STRC preferred repurchase and latest bitcoin purchase in dollars, the BTC that sum would have bought, and repurchase program room left.

Strategy repurchased STRC preferred for approximately $192.4 million and spent approximately $21.5 million on 250 BTC. At the week's average of $86,194, $192.4 million would have bought about 2,232 BTC. $354.8 million remains in the repurchase program.

What happened

  • Strategy bought the coins between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11 at an average of $86,194 each, fees and expenses included.
  • The repurchase retired 1,932,145 shares of the variable-rate Series A perpetual Stretch preferred, known as STRC.
  • Of the $21.5 million spent on bitcoin, $21 million came from selling 125,183 MSTR common shares and $500,000 from existing cash.
  • At Oct. 11 the company held a $4.88 billion U.S. dollar reserve and a further $640.5 million of cash.

Why it matters

  • Who has to decide decision At the week's average price, the $192.4 million would have bought about 2,232 BTC, a 0.26% addition to holdings. Strategy chose the preferred.
  • Who's exposed exposure At the $82,252 price in Saylor's credit metric, the week's coins sit about $1.0 million under water, while the whole stack is 9.0% above its $75,444 average cost.
  • What it limits constraint The $354.8 million left in the repurchase program covers about 1.8 repurchases of this size, so a third round at $192.4 million would not fit.

The 250 coins add 0.03% to a stack of 848,250 [20], so the week is about the repurchase, or rather about the ratio between the two lines, nearly nine to one [9]. Two rounds make a short record, but both pair a few hundred coins with a nine-figure buyback. Cryptobriefing, citing earlier reports, put the previous round at 334 BTC for $28.7 million against $176.3 million spent on STRC between late September and early October [21]. Add this week and the total is 584 coins for $50.2 million beside $368.7 million of preferred retired, about 7.3 dollars of buyback for each dollar of bitcoin [13]. Cryptobriefing called the gap between the old and new figures a discrepancy [22], but the earlier figures describe a window ending in early October and the new ones cover Oct. 5 to Oct. 11 [1], so we treat them as successive rounds.

The bitcoin was paid for almost entirely with new common stock: sales of MSTR shares covered 97.7% of the $21.5 million [11]. The sources do not say what funded the repurchase, and the dollar reserve and cash are October 11 balances with no earlier balance published beside them [4]. Saylor's post puts the cushion next to the buyback. He wrote that "USD Duration is 3.5 yrs and STRC's BTC Credit is 52 bps assuming 10% BTC ARR, 40% BTC Vol, and a BTC price of $82,252" [8].

The shares retired at an average of about $99.58 each [12]. A prediction market Cryptobriefing cites asks whether STRC reaches $100 by December 31, and it priced YES at 85.5%, slightly below its earlier level [23]. A question framed that way implies the preferred trades under $100 today. Cryptobriefing's own gloss is that market participants appear to interpret the buybacks as supportive of confidence in STRC [24].

In our view, STRC is the priority for now. The buyback is nearly nine times the bitcoin spend [9] (and the only line with an identified funding source, common stock, is the smaller one), so on this reading weekly coin counts stay in the hundreds while STRC sits under $100. Two other outcomes fit the same data. The buyback could be a one-time defence of the price, with bitcoin buying growing again once STRC recovers. Or the repurchases could be opportunistic, made when the preferred dips below $100, with the bitcoin pace set by how much common stock the market will take.

We would be wrong if the next disclosure shows bitcoin purchases in the thousands of coins alongside another STRC repurchase.

What to watch

  • Next weekly disclosure: whether the bitcoin purchase moves from hundreds of coins into the thousands while STRC repurchases continue.
  • The next reported dollar reserve and cash balance, which would show how much of the repurchase it paid for.
  • The STRC $100-by-December prediction market, now at 85.5%, and the average price of any further repurchase.
