Sui Foundation puts $30 million behind DATA Network's move off its own Layer 1

Sui Foundation commits $30 million as DATA Network, formerly Story Protocol, retires its own Layer 1 and moves onto Sui. The chain is about 20 months old, and the only report ties its end to a change of business and to foundation money.

Sui Foundation backs DATA Network's move onto Sui Sui Foundation's investment and DATA's logged data activity, per Cryptobriefing, plus the retiring chain's age worked out from its launch date.

Four figures: a $30 million Sui Foundation investment backing the move; over 250 million on-chain data registrations on DATA as of October 2026; over 1.5 billion user-contributed data records at Kled, DATA's flagship integration; and a chain about 20 months old when the move was disclosed.

What happened

  • Cryptobriefing reports that Eman Abio, identified as a Sui co-founder, revealed the migration on October 8, 2026 at Sui ecosystem events.
  • Walrus Protocol, a decentralized storage layer, will also be integrated into DATA to store and coordinate its data.
  • On June 25, 2026 the project rebranded from Story Protocol to the DATA Foundation, and IP token holders were swapped into the DATA token 1:1.
  • Kled, DATA's flagship integration, has separately recorded over 1.5 billion user-contributed data records.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost Kled and Numo carry the engineering bill: their code moves from an EVM environment to Sui's own programming model, and they need a path that works before the old chain goes dark.
  • Who's exposed exposure DATA token holders are exposed to an unanswered design question, because Cryptobriefing lists how the token functions once the independent chain is retired as a key detail still to watch.
  • What it sets up precedent Cryptobriefing frames foundation money as a main tool for winning application migrations, so a $30 million payment to move one project is a price other chains will be measured against.

The order of events is the first thing to check against a failed-chain reading. DATA launched in February 2025 as an EVM-compatible Layer 1 for programmable intellectual property [6], changed its name and its business about 16 months later [11], and disclosed the move off its own chain 105 days after the rebrand [12]. The business changed first and the chain followed, about 20 months after launch [10].

Cryptobriefing is the only publisher in our material, and it attributes the news to remarks at Sui ecosystem events [14]. The report does not disclose how the $30 million is structured, or what the old chain cost to run or earned in fees. It does report activity: over 250 million on-chain data registrations as of October 2026, through applications built on the chain [5]. By the project's own count that is a busy chain. Registrations are not revenue.

Divide the money by that activity and Sui is paying about 12 cents per registration [13]. The figure is crude, since the commitment buys a migration and not the past registrations. Cryptobriefing's own explanation is that chains now compete for whole applications and that foundation money is one of the main tools for winning them [18]. On that account Sui bought a customer, and the price looks modest if DATA's data flows through Walrus as the report suggests it could [16].

DATA will no longer maintain separate infrastructure [1] and now concentrates on provenance, licensing and auditing, including its Trace tool [4]. We'd expect the freed engineering effort to go there, though the report does not say so.

In our view the supportable claim is narrower than the angle. The chain built for programmable IP is being retired after the project moved its focus to AI training data [8], and a foundation is paying for the successor. The failed-chain thesis gains support if fee and activity data show the old chain declining before October 8. It is wrong if they show growth into the announcement, because a project that retires a growing chain is choosing where to spend, and the $30 million is then the price of that choice.

What to watch

  • Whether Sui or DATA discloses how the $30 million is structured and sets a shutdown date for the old chain.
  • Fee and activity data for the old chain before October 8, which would settle whether it was declining or growing when the move was announced.
  • The migration path for Kled and Numo from EVM to Sui, and the published role of the DATA token after the chain is retired.

DATA Network, previously known as Story Protocol, will be rebuilt to run as a native protocol on Sui, its independent Layer 1 chain will be shut down, and DATA stops maintaining separate infrastructure.
