What happened

  • Temporal raised $550 million in Series E funding at a valuation of $12.55 billion.
  • Lightspeed led the financing, with Wellington Management and Goldman Sachs Alternatives co-leading and Tiger Global in the lead group, while Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, Index Ventures and GIC returned.
  • Open-source installs of the platform passed 43 million in August, a 134 percent increase since January 2026.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost Existing holders pay for the round in dilution: $550 million against $12.55 billion is about 4.4 percent of the company if that valuation is post-money, and the account does not say whether it is.
  • Who's exposed exposure Temporal sells a managed service for software its customers can also self-host, so the largest accounts negotiate the cloud bill with a working alternative in hand.
  • What it sets up precedent A $550 million private cheque struck at 50 times revenue gives the next workflow-orchestration company a reference price to quote to its own investors.

The price is 50.2 times revenue, $12.55 billion over a run rate of $250 million [21].

August is the month to work from. Temporal Cloud processed more than 1.9 trillion actions in it, up more than 350 percent on the year [7]. Annualised, that is about 22.8 trillion actions, and $250 million spread across them comes to roughly $11 per million actions, a bit over a cent per thousand [22].

The two disclosed growth rates do not match. More than 350 percent puts volume at least 4.5 times last year's; more than 200 percent puts revenue at least 3 times [7][5]. At those floors, revenue per action is down about a third [20]. Both figures are floors, so the comparison holds at the numbers disclosed: if revenue in fact grew 400 percent while actions grew 355, the direction reverses.

Net dollar retention above 200 percent since February means the accounts Temporal already had more than doubled their spend [6]. Revenue at 3 times the base with the installed cohort at 2 times leaves 1 times for new customers, so roughly half the net new revenue came from customers already on the platform [23]. The cloud has more than 4,300 paying customers, among them OpenAI, NVIDIA, Netflix, JPMorgan Chase, Shopify and Scale AI [8][9].

Open-source installs passed 43 million in August, up 134 percent since January 2026 [17]. That is about 10,000 installs for every paying cloud account [24]. Temporal ships both the open-source deployment and the managed cloud service [15], so a paying customer's alternative to the cloud bill is its own operations team.

Samar Abbas, Temporal's co-founder and chief executive, said Durable Execution is becoming a standard for reliable applications [12]. Lightspeed said production AI requires systems that can handle real-world execution [13]. The technology holds application state through failures so long-running workflows resume and finish, and customers now run it under long-lived AI agents and autonomous vehicle simulations [14][16].

In my view the price is a bet that the 200 percent retention persists, and the action count is the weaker half of the case, because volume is growing while the revenue each action produces shrinks. Retention drifting into the 120s while per-action revenue keeps sliding would settle it against the buyers. Temporal says the money goes to global operations, research and development, developer and enterprise go-to-market teams, and the infrastructure under its customer base [11]. Headcount doubled over the past year to 570 [10]; the round works out at about $965,000 per current employee [25].

What to watch

  • Whether net dollar retention holds above 200 percent beyond the February start of the streak Temporal disclosed.
  • The next action count set against the next revenue figure: if volume again outruns revenue, Temporal is discounting per action as it scales.
  • Whether paying cloud accounts grow faster than the 43 million open-source installs, the test of whether self-hosting feeds the cloud or substitutes for it.
