Code in TikTok's US app puts the wallet in the inbox, not at checkout
Bloomberg found references to peer-to-peer transfers on TikTok Pay inside the US iPhone app. The interesting part is where they sit: DMs, not the storefront TikTok already outsources.

What happened
- TikTok is working on a way for users to send each other money inside direct messages, according to Bloomberg.
- If rolled out, the DM money-sending feature would use TikTok Pay, already available in Southeast Asia for TikTok Shop purchases.
- References to the feature sit in code hidden in the current version of TikTok's US iPhone app.
- The Bloomberg report was written by Natalie Lung and Alexandra Levine.
- A TikTok spokesperson told Bloomberg the feature is not being tested in any market, which suggests it remains in early development.
Why it matters
TikTok is developing a way for users to send each other money inside direct messages, running on its existing TikTok Pay system, according to a Bloomberg report by Natalie Lung and Alexandra Levine that cites references buried in code in the current version of TikTok's US iPhone app [1][2][3][4]. A TikTok spokesperson told Bloomberg the feature is not being tested in any market, and the company did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment [5][6].
Treat the ship date as unknown. What is worth reading is the placement. In the US, TikTok Shop checkout does not run on TikTok Pay at all: it accepts PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, Affirm and cards, according to Mashable [15][16]. TikTok Pay itself is live only in Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, where it handles TikTok Shop purchases [17]. The storefront is already brokered by other people's rails. The inbox is not.
The code describes a design anyone who has used a consumer payments app will recognise. A recipient would tap to accept a payment before it expires, the sender would get updates by push notification or inbox, and a note could be attached to the transfer, much like a Venmo caption [7][8][9].
There is existing behaviour to capture. TikTok users already buy digital coins to gift creators and livestream hosts, which can be cashed out [18], and many creators list a Venmo or Cash App handle in their bios so followers can pay them off-platform [19]. Bloomberg's framing is that a built-in transfer would keep that activity, and the fees around it, inside TikTok [20].
The volumes explain the interest. TikTok Shop users spent $50.3bn globally in the first half of this year, with about $11.8bn of that from the US, according to a report cited by Mashable [21][22] - roughly 23 percent of global spend [33]. Separately, Sensor Tower puts consumer spending inside the app at more than $2.9bn so far this year, with TikTok the top app globally by in-app purchase revenue since 2022 and US spending on TikTok ahead of YouTube, Facebook and Instagram [23][24][25]. Commerce is roughly seventeen times the size of the coins-and-gifts economy, on figures covering different periods [34]. A DM wallet sits between the two.
The staffing points the same way. Some ByteDance leaders working on payments are former JPMorgan executives, and the bank once helped the company build its payments infrastructure, Bloomberg reported [26][27]. Reuters reported earlier this year that TikTok applied to Brazil's central bank for two licences, one to operate as a lender and one to offer prepaid accounts [10]. Both TikTok and ByteDance are hiring for financial-services roles in the US and abroad [11], and ByteDance took a record $20bn loan this year [12]. Douyin, ByteDance's Chinese app, already supports peer-to-peer transfers through Douyin Pay [28].
The context is a changed ownership structure. TikTok and ByteDance closed a deal this year moving parts of the US operation to American investors including Oracle and Silver Lake, intended to avoid a nationwide ban, with ByteDance retaining a 19.9 percent stake [29][30][31]. This month the Trump administration lifted its ban on TikTok on federal government devices, concluding the app was no longer a security risk [32].
Watch whether TikTok Pay shows up at US Shop checkout before it shows up in DMs; the order tells you whether this is a payments business or a retention feature. Watch the expiry on tap-to-accept, which is a float and compliance decision, not a design one. And watch the licence filings and job postings, which move before code does. Venmo, Zelle and X Money are the comparison set TikTok would be entering [13][14].
